Grey’s Anatomy season 12, episode 2 sends Miranda Bailey into the hospital as the new chief. Let’s take a look at how her first day played out in tonight’s episode, “Walk Tall.”

There is no such thing as a perfect day at Grey Sloan Memorial. Miranda Bailey of all people should know that. Tonight’s Grey’s Anatomy season 12, episode 2, “Walking Tall,” gave Bailey unbridled power in the halls, but being Chief is not all its cracked up to be at the end of the day.

Imagine for a second that Miranda Bailey documented her first day on the job. Check out how it played out.

Day One: First day as Chief of Surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial

7 a.m. to 8 a.m.

Anticipate the impossible, be ready to see five steps ahead, set Ben’s alarm fifteen minutes earlier for tomorrow. Nerves will not get the best of me. Not today.

8 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Did no one read my email? Attending meetings are so last year. Why talk about saving lives when you could be out saving them? Wait, did anyone else smell cake and a fresh fruit platter? Man, there were a ton of females in that room. Neuro, cardio, general surgery, newborns all female attending. You are steering a good ship, Miranda!

9:01 a.m.to 9:15 a.m.

A patient zero on my first day? April Kepner presented with lesions, a cough, a fever upon her return from the Middle East. Simple solution– isolation. Sure she is a firey, caged tiger, but I cannot have an infectious disease taking over the hospital on my first day.

9:16 a.m. to 10:17 a.m.

The ER never ceases to be the gift that keeps on giving in this hospital. I can measure my enthusiasm no better than the interns can guess the cause of Jane’s head injury. After a quick teaching moment, this is after all a place of learning, I finally revealed to two fresh faces Jane’s startling height. My first guess, pituitary gland tumor that resulted in an increased release of hormones that account for her rapid growth.

Reminder: Push patient follow-ups and surgeries on Grey. Sure she seemed stressed this morning, what with taking on my anatomy class and her own surgeries. If anyone can handle it, Grey can.

I should check on Kepner at some point.

10:30 to 11:15

Jade needs two surgeries and refuses to accept any further care. She works for a company that is responsible for bring the Internet to Africa. She refuses to delegate and I respect her wanting to carry the world on her shoulders, but she will not be able to do that if she leaves.

I have four hours until her next neuro exam. I can make this impossible possible.

11:17 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Avery, Shepherd, Torres, Pierce. Gather them in a room, give them a problem and watch the magic unfold. Two surgeries, completely mapped out in four hours with one week of recovery time.

Reminder: Print bumper stickers to slip into everyone’s lockers. “Take the impossible and make it possible. – Miranda Bailey”

Must check on Kepner soon. Maybe Webber stopped by.

11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

That one pale intern seems to be following Jo around today. Better her than me!

Grey seems to be handling my patients. The board looks good, clean.

3:26 p.m. to 4:57 p.m.

Everything went to hell in a hand basket.

Why did I leave Jade under the interns’ watch? Those were the same people who paralyzed a patient on their first day. I gave them one thing to do! Now, I have a woman who may die on the street and 1000 African children who will never be able to read!

Jade collapsed on Wilson before she made it to the door. Luckily Wilson’s body broke her fall. That new intern, the one with the hair had the ingenious idea to grab a door to stabilize Jade. He cannot watch a patient, but at least he can transport one.

And then there is Kepner! I should get Owen up there.

I got the crew into the OR, finally. No one would step up and sign off on the surgery. I guess I have to do everything today.

Ben is in a difficult spot, he has to hear everything and say nothing. He also has to take my orders. I cannot blame him for his mood, but it certainly didn’t help my day.

5:45 p.m. to 6:15 p.m.

Callie finished her portion of the surgery and as I made it to the gallery my perfect day crumbled before my eyes. An artery was struck and Jade began to bleed out. Brilliant surgeons panicking, sirens blaring, everyone’s eyes on me… Fight or flight? Flight.

Grey caught me off guard, demanding more of my attention. She’s getting things done. I knew she could. But the tone of her voice saying the words, “Respectfully, Chief,” twisted the knife in my stomach.

6:45 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

What does Richard Webber have that I do not? The ability to talk someone off of a cliff. Richard gave me the stethoscope he received the first day of his residency. Beyond this physical gift, I received an even better emotional one.

He reminded me that I, Miranda Bailey, deserve this job. But I need to learn how to do it. I am not the general. My surgeons are the generals, they need a leader. It will not happen over night, but it will happen over time.

And you know what– they are brilliant. They stopped the bleeding, they stabilized Jade, they removed the entire tumor. They are exhausted, they fought the battle, the did the best they could.

They are extraordinary and special and need to be reminded of this. The outcome is on me.

7:45 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

What did Richard and Owen have that I do not? A reliable Chief of Surgery who can take the heat, the pressure. I will have that. Grey is my me. She is now the chief. (At least of general surgery.)

Jade woke up and tomorrow I will too.

Tomorrow I will be better and that is the best that I can do.
