Grey’s Anatomy season 11, episode 6, “Don’t Let’s Start,” just aired on ABC. Check out our recap to see what happens when family gatherings go awry in Seattle!

Airway, breathing, circulation. The ABC’s of the ER can save a life as easily as be the cause of death. But the same can be said, metaphorically speaking, of the doctors’ personal lives in tonight’s, Grey’s Anatomy season 11, episode 6, “Don’t Let’s Start.”

When it rains, it pours: The ER is flooded with patients ranging from extreme car jacking injuries, to an upset stomach, and a head injury. But while the doctors deal with full beds, Callie and Arizona try to emerge from their suffocating marriage, Derek pushes Meredith to her connect with Maggie, and April’s mother touches down in Seattle.

Callie and Owen void a patient of her blood in an attempt to save her life. Nothing is known about the Jane Doe, until Callie discovers a tattoo that identifies her as a veteran. Meanwhile, Mr. Tummy Ache tries his best to get out of Bailey’s care by agreeing to undergo a scope test. The results are less than favorable when instead of a lodged onion blossom, Bailey finds a very large tumor.

Bailey goes over her own medical history in light of her patient’s death by tumor. It’s not going to be an easy process, but she is going to start taking her own advice and fix her own health.

Mother knows:In the case of Hurricane Kepner, Jackson agrees to take April’s mother out to get the nursery up to his mother-in-law’s standards, not those of a surgical resident. Bless you, St. Jackson. April comes home to see that her mom bought everything, including a crib that goes back four generations. But for how much April’s mother gives her pause, Jackson is the one who wants the help. His family was, as you may well know, a nightmare. Jackson simply wants some guidance through the baby rearing process.

Grandma Kepner explains to April that she is scared of her daughter tackling a career she does not understand. April begins to understand the crazy and makes sure there is room for her to ask questions down the road. April and Jackson take in their nursery and assure each other their futures are going to be just fine.

Where’s Waldo? Arizona’s first surgery under Dr. Herman follows a “personal day” taken by the ever present doctor. In the ER the next afternoon, Arizona flies through each step, but when she cannot remember the exact words in Herman’s notes, Herman freaks.

Arizona’s superior may not be treating her well, but after basically trading her marriage for the fellowship there isn’t much she can say without risking her career. But, quite unluckily, Dr. Herman reveals that she has an inoperable brain tumor and six months to live. There is one major caveat, if Arizona tells the board she will lose the chance to learn forever, or she can absorb all the knowledge in six months.

Awkward Family Photo: Besides needing to have more black people in Zola’s life for the sake of her hair braiding, Derek wants to gather all of Meredith’s dysfunction around one table. Maggie becomes a bit hesitant to attend after the invitation is extended to Richard. But Derek overhears, Richard and Meredith thinking about calling off the dinner and sits them down to lay down the law. Aneurysm first, dinner second.

Right before dinner, Meredith and Derek take an extra long shower, together, leaving their guests to confront each other on the porch. Richard admits that in the first two months of parenting you can make mistakes and the child doesn’t remember, but now Maggie remembers. Maggie assures him that she doesn’t care about his parenting, she has her mom and dad, she only wanted honesty from him.

The Veteran Code: The victim of the car jacking has a name, Melissa, but she also has another secret, her car was her life. After her tours in Iraq, her job was gone, her fiancé was gone, and she had to make due. Even with a job she could not make rent and as a result she could not have an address or a bank account. But one thing she will not accept is the charity that comes from identifying as homeless.

Owen has another idea though. Out ranking her, Owen offers his two cents. He tells her that she must be aware that by accepting help she is not taking anything away from the next guy, but rather, she is setting herself up to help many more in there future.

Jo takes this case as a chance to personally reflect on her own situation with Alex. She has no claim over the bed, or the house. It all disappears when he goes away, but Alex assures her that by “going home,” she is going home with him.
