Grey’s Anatomy returns tonight with season 11, episode 3, “Got to Be Real.” Check out Hypable’s recap to find out what happened!

The Cases:

•Lumberyard accident causes a tree impalement
•Head trauma
•Wounded Warriors fitted for prosthesis

Tequila and Coffee: Meredith and Alex are beginning to become the “new” Meredith and Cristina we all deserve. Meredith takes their shower chats and tequila drinking in the morning for granted, but Alex needs the shoulder to lean on much to the dismay of Jo. In true Grey’s Anatomy style when the elevator doors open, something more pressing is waiting to demand attention. This week a man with a tree through his stomach is ready to be treated.

Fully Funded Robot Legs: Owen talks up Callie to a group of wounded warriors, making her out to be a miracle healer. But when the first patient is made extravagant promises by Owen, Callie needs to disqualify him due to a shabby amputation. While it is not the patient’s fault, Owen takes the failure personally and unleashes his anger on Callie in front of the entire floor.

Avery saunters into Callie’s lab to groan about playing hall monitor when he could be performing surgery. When Callie explains that her patient is not a candidate for the robot leg, Avery suggests a nerve altering path that will fix the communication problem in the soldier’s leg.

When the surgery is a success, Callie and Owen invite Avery onto their team for a new project to fund the wounded warriors with some of her research money. Callie and Owen face their demons on their own terms and with each other. Cristina ripped the light from Owen’s life, a light that once brightened the darkness. He needs something, this one project, to be good.

In a similar vein, Callie and Arizona’s plans for a second child are put at a standstill when the fellowship and Callie’s new commitment to the wounded warriors becomes too much to handle. The worst place to have this discussion is in the waiting room of the surrogacy agency.

The Fabulous Fighting Shepherds: Derek is in a funk. A great, big, “I made a choice and have to live with it” funk. Who does he take out his aggression on? None other than the other Shepherd who took away the head of neuro from him. A step backwards is not the cards for him, but he cannot take away Amelia’s achievement because Meredith took his.

Boston Blur: Meredith and Alex take a break from the tequila and the speech practice to talk about Meredith’s issues. The reason Alex is taking the heat of her problems is because Meredith and Derek are still not on speaking terms. The pressure is mounting in the Shepherd household as Derek walks around like a martyr after giving up his job in D.C. to stay with his family. Meanwhile, Meredith sees it as a forfeit in which they both lose.

Alex decides they should check out Maggie’s claims and a few records on the Seattle Grace database confirm that the spring Ellis has her suicide attempt, she was pregnant. Meredith quickly connects the dots and brings Richard over to find out that he knew for over a week, but has yet to tell Maggie. Ellis stole that opportunity for Richard to be a father 30 years ago and he is having a hard time trying to deal with that fact.

When things calm down, Richard explains that he wants nothing more than to hold onto the bond he felt with Maggie in the OR that afternoon. If it is answers about Ellis she wants, Richard should be the one to give them to her. However, Maggie does not give him the opportunity to say his piece and accuses him of abandoning her.

Esteemed Members of the Board: Bailey’s tactic for the time leading up to the big vote is keep the ship on course. Scrub in, march up the meeting shut them all down before they even have a chance to consider anyone else for the position, and walk out victorious.

Meanwhile, one of her proteges, Karev has a very real chance to get the position. He practiced his speech, recognizes his contributions to the hospital and, as Edwards points out to Bailey, has most of the support of the board leaning his way. Karev wants more this more than anything and best of all he finally believes he can grab it.

Surrounded by feuding couples, depressed chiefs, and two very eager candidates Arizona calls in Alex to deliver the bad news. Bailey is the newest member of the board.
