Two afternoons in the park reveal two very different stories on Grey’s Anatomy season 11, episode 12. Find out what is in our recap.

Cases of the week: Ben’s brother, Kurt, is admitted to the hospital after shortness of breath causes him to pass out in the woods. A woman fell down a flight of concrete stairs after being proposed to.

Ben and his brother Kurt take Bailey off the beaten path to spread the ashes of their recently deceased father on an old camping ground. But Kurt cannot make it up the hill in time. Once at the hospital, Kurt refuses treatment, choosing to blame his lack of breakfast for the fall. Meredith runs tests on his tender abdomen, revealing another secret Kurt would rather leave undiscovered.

But doctors will be doctors and Bailey and Meredith come to the same conclusion: Kurt is transitioning. Before Ben can get past thinking his brother is on drugs, Kurt begins to throw up blood and required emergency surgery to remove his spleen. Following his surgery, Kurt identifies as female and wants to live life as a woman. Ben takes the news personally as a betrayal of their trust. As Ben explains to Bailey, Kurt was the first person to know everything in Ben’s life. From his first crush, to his proposal to Miranda, and for 25 years he kept the biggest thing in his life from his brother. Both want to run in opposite directions from each other, but Bailey’s work is not done.

Owen and Callie may not be enjoying a horizontal refreshment, but the offers are floating around. In fact, Callie turned down an offer just a few weeks ago, while Owen is brushing off Herman’s advances to try out the attending’s couch. But no one is going as far to avoid romance as the young woman who fake fainted down a flight of concrete steps to avoid her boyfriend’s proposal. She cannot bear to break his gentle heart, but brain surgery and a fractured knee should be the boost she needs to let her doting boyfriend down easy.

Meredith’s cryptic weekend turns out to be nothing more than a kid-free, husband-free zone. Maggie has every right to question her sister’s whereabouts, especially when she is watching her kids and fielding calls from Derek. As she arrived at the gate and watched her plane take off, Meredith decided that getting off the plane and seeing her husband, who may not share her enthusiasm for the visit, was not worth the risk.

Herman may not be ready for surgery just yet, giving her time not only to operate, but take in the gossip of her protege. Arizona, the less than perfect attending who slept around and yells at Jo for wandering the house naked, is the doctor Herman wants to befriend.

Catherine Avery is having a hard time saying goodbye to Richard, but not for the reasons Richard would like to believe. When she offers to scrub in his surgical service, Catherine uses the opportunity to call in her son for a consult. His brief visit to the OR reveals that he is sad and angry and he cannot help his wife. Work may be a band-aid for now, but he cannot tiptoe around April forever. Just like Catherine cannot continue to play Richard forever. What’s done is done between Richard and the powerful women in his life, but Jackson and April’s struggles are just beginning.

Bailey may not get Ben back in the room to talk, but gives Kurt another person to confide in, Jackson Avery. Rosaline, as Kurt will now be known, will be monitored by the hospital as she makes her transition to a woman.

Herman’s MO behind stealing the couch is that she does not want to miss a single moment in the little life that she has left. Giving up everything was the best thing she has done, starting with her husband many years ago. Arizona may not have anything to go home to and she takes a page out of Herman’s book and spends the night stealing couches and getting away from the life she no longer wants to live.

After debriefing Maggie in the morning, Meredith heads to Alex to finish airing her thoughts. Although she does not want to give up on Derek, she needs to give up on the right now. Alex has other plans for his right now: He’s certain he will marry Jo.

Another trip into the woods is more productive for two members of the hospital. Amelia “No Game Without Drugs” Shepherd arrives with a bottle of water, sparkling with lime. While she does not have game, Owen gets the message and kisses her before she walks home for the evening. Callie enters another wild area, Joe’s, and dances the night away with a man from across the bar.
