Grey’s Anatomy kicked off Shonda Thursdays this week with the season 11 premiere! Catch up with the doctors with our recap!

Picking up right where last season’s finale ended, no time was lost for Grey’s Anatomy fans this summer. Here’s what viewers were treated to in the season premiere!

He’s not the sun: There is only one way to solve disagreements with significant others in the Grey’s Anatomy universe: Climb into bed with your best friend. But with Cristina off in Germany, the task falls on Alex, who at first is resistant, but dishes out advice anyway.

Alex is not the only one feeling Cristina’s absence. Owen calls out to page Cristina, but quickly corrects his autopilot. However, April senses that someone could benefit from Jackson’s companionship. On his way to the roof of bad CGI, Meredith, Maggie, and Owen have a problem with the wind and loose gurneys, losing one to the side of the helipad.

The gurney lands on a parked jeep where two teens are having a lap party with no pants. The two are pulled out and treated for broken collar bones and head injuries. One member of the party is a patient who is due for a chemo treatment, while his girlfriend winds up suffering from a more severe head trauma. This plot line plays a larger role to underscore the story of Callie and Arizona’s feelings about losing control of their baby.

The Prodigal Daughter: At the close of last season, Richard realizes that Maggie may very well be his daughter. Instead of taking his troubles to the bar, Richard airs his news to an AA meeting. However, the anonymous portion goes out the window when the crowd parts to reveal Amelia Shepherd in the gathering.

Speaking of the prodigal daughters, Amelia Shepherd ponders what Derek will do without his daughter (and son). Well for one, Amelia will take over the surgery residency. But she will not have Derek believe that Meredith is wrong for wanting to stay in Seattle.

CAN SOMEONE GET ME AN ECHO? The hiker who arrived via helicopter believes he was searching for his family in the desert for three days, but it was closer to two months. As he begins to hallucinate, he is in need of surgery for his kidney, but he also may have some underlying heart condition. Meredith will never know, however, because ignoring the “new girl’s” request for an Echo seems to be a reoccurring event.

That moment comes back to bite her when the patient codes on the table and in the shuffle of Maggie barging in to take over the surgery, the kidney is misplaced. Kidney recovered, heart in working order, and Derek getting a headful of heartbreaking sleep advice, Meredith and Maggie finally have it out in the break room. Maggie refuses to suck up to the almighty Meredith Grey and Meredith refuses to be pushed around.

Outside, Richard meets up with Maggie, who confesses that she regrets leaving her wonderful parents in search for some unwanted blood relatives. Dejected, Richard walks away.

Wasn’t there a game on? Stop asking me out on dates! That is pretty much the ongoing interruption in Owen’s life since April sent the men on the hunt. Richard asks him to Jenga and snacks, Jackson invites for a couple brewskies, and Derek thinks there was a game on at some point.

Owen, however, goes to the patient and explains that there is a reason he survived. In what he believes is a dream state, the family returns to him. Alex takes Meredith under his wing, and steps in as her person. (No, it’s not the same, but no one can truly be Cristina.)

There is still one board seat up for grabs. Although Alex has Cristina’s shares and her seat, Bailey is correct in assuming there is a bylaw that requires a majority vote. The results remain to be heard.

In other news, Derek resigned. No job is worth missing his kids’ lives. At the bar Meredith and Maggie order a tequila.
