Sometimes the character drama pulls focus away from the patients whose stories underscore the drama of Grey’s Anatomy. Here are 11 patients you should remember from season 11.

Remember the guy with the tree in his stomach? How about the 10 year old Meredith thought was pregnant? These two cases and plenty more flooded the ER of Grey Sloan Memorial long before April brought a patient in on a tow truck. Take a look back at the best cases the doctors of Grey’s Anatomy tackled in season 11.

Owen’s mother takes a fall

Ok, this first one is not so much a great medical case as it is a spectator sport for those who like to cringe! Owen Hunt’s mother is admitted to the hospital after taking a fall in her shower. But it is the case of the mysterious, young eye candy at her side that raises everyone’s blood pressure except the patient’s. Owen must deal with treating his mother’s hidden heart condition while also making sure that her heart is protected outside of the OR.

The root of the problem

Over the years we’ve seen people enter the hospital with forks in their legs, nails in their skull, and even a group of people impaled on a single pole. But this may be the first tree to impale a patient on Grey’s Anatomy. While it is not as interesting as the patient from season 3 who was turning into a tree, it did give us this excellent gif:

Oh baby, baby

Outside of the ER, Meredith happens upon a young girl who looks like she is in labor. Her stomach is hard and rigid, but she cannot be more than ten years old. In an attempt to keep her citizenship out of the spotlight, a mother waited until the last possible minute to send her daughter off to the hospital alone for treatment. This case developed into a great moment for Alex to step into his role as a pediatric attending at Grey Sloan and help both the girl and her mother.

Battle of the bionic leg

The only extended trial we saw of Owen and Callie’s veteran project turned into a competition between two army buddies who lost their legs. During the trial, Callie pushed both of the guys into a healthy competition which nearly ended the research after one patient literally took a step too far and slipped into a coma after smashing his head on the way down. While comas are never fun, it was a great to look at the progress of Callie, Owen, and by extension, Derek’s work.

Gurney interuptus

Don’t you hate it when you sneak off with your girlfriend and a gurney flies off the roof of the hospital and crashes into your make out mobile? Yeah, us too. That was the case for two teens, one who is being treated for cancer as they hoped to share a private moment together outside of the hospital. Lesson learned, do not sit under a helipad when the wind is kicking.

Proposal fever

On the other end of the romantic spectrum is the woman who fakes passing out to avoid breaking up with her boyfriend. Not exactly a case that involves the medical deductions of Doctor House, but certainly one that needs a little tough love from Callie. This woman would rather feign a fainting spell and fall down a set of concrete steps than tell her boyfriend that she no longer wishes to be with him.

Love that is stories tall

In a moment equally heartbreaking and miraculous, Grey’s Anatomy introduced an elderly couple who jumped from their apartment building during a fire. To save his wife the man held onto her for dear life, refusing to let go even after she passed away in his arms following the fall. But once he lets her go in the hospital, her pulse registers faintly and the two continue their love story.

Tunnel vision

At the close of last week’s episode, April Kepner arrives in the ambulance bay with a tow truck and the patient that the team of surgeons declared a lost cause at the scene of the tunnel collapse. But in this week’s finale, Keith will get a second shot at life as the hospital staff rallies together to get him out of the car and into the OR.

The great tumor

Tumors ruled the Grey’s Anatomy cases this season and only one surpasses our third most impressive case this season. Meredith’s 3D printer comes in handy as the doctors prepare to take a journey not unlike Odysseus in Homer’s The Odyssey. This tumor takes over a woman’s body, refusing to stop eating until it consumes every organ. But with all hands on deck, each step of the journey is executed with precision and the first of many successes is logged for Meredith Grey.

Members only

This may not be the case that cures cancer, or puts an end to diabetes, but it was certainly the most entertaining case of the season. A man walks into a hospital with his penis is a take out container. Sounds like the start of a very sick joke, and that is exactly what this case turns out to be. When a jealous wife cuts off her husband’s penis he is taken to the ER by his sous chef and current romantic fling. Successfully reattached by Catherine Avery and Stephanie Edwards, their work, it turns out is not a one shot deal. After his scorned lover catches wind that he will return to his wife, she walks into his recovery room and rips it right off again.

Put on your cape, it’s the superhero case

Dr. Herman’s tumor provided two very different cases depending on whose side of the story you found yourself on. From Herman’s point of view, her tumor gave her months to live and that meant 27 babies lives to save. From Amelia Shepherd’s point of view, this was her career defining moment. 13 hours in the OR, overexposure to radiation, and two exhausted surgeons later, Amelia finds out that Herman’s eyesight is gone, but she has her entire life ahead of her.
