Grey’s Anatomy tests the marital waters tonight as April and Jackson discuss the legal side of their marriage. Find out what happens to the happy couple with our “We Gotta Get Out of Here” recap!

When Jackson’s mother shows up with “post-nup” papers in hand, April’s honeymoon phase is quickly brought to an end. Meanwhile, Richard celebrates his birthday with a few surprises! Check out our full Grey’s Anatomy recap for “We Gotta Get Out of Here.”

First Surprise: A pullover engagement and a highway wedding in another wedding’s gown was not how Mrs. Avery imagined her son’s nuptials to pan out. But never fear, Mama is around to fix the legal and lineage side of the equation. Presenting April with a post-nup document is only one hurdle she will have to jump through in order to please her mother-in-law. Even against Jackson’s numerous pleas to leave them alone, the Avery name is sacred in his mother’s eyes and she presses on.

Bailey’s idea of the perfect present for Richard on his birthday is not the same as the one Owen plans to offer. As Bailey announces the case of a boy whose abdomen shows a spinal column, an absorbed twin, Owen comes along with the idea that Richard should consider retiring. Absorbed twin? Absorbed in Netflix period dramas in retired life? Hmm…

Surprise Number Two: Meredith adds another member to her team, a printing engineer, and places Stephanie in charge of him. Get ready to add another love affair to the list, folks! Meanwhile Shane takes on a case that may set him back with some of the progress he made in Cristina’s eyes. A young woman, who is also pregnant, may not make it through her delivery if she does not undergo their trial surgery.

Callie and Derek finally have it out over the sensor ownership. While Derek’s name is on everything that they made and was taken by the government, Callie’s case against him falls flat, legally speaking. However, her emotional case gains her some ground against Derek. Her passion for the work she was doing and the pride she took in the advancements they made together, leads to a slight change in Derek’s initial mindset that there was nothing to be done.

Third Surprise: Richard offers his patient a chance to own the “twin” in a jar, but ultimately he ends up grossing out his recovering pal. As he wraps up his birthday surgery, Richard heads to his not-so-surprise party where Owen offers him another gift. This time, it is to become the Director of the Residency program. Well, that is certainly a surprise!

Avery’s mother, though succeeding with her paperwork mission, is not done quite yet. Another aspect of her visit includes talking about the children. That is where April draws the line. Jackson and her have not even discussed their future with or without offspring and to set boarding schools and board meeting ages in front her, proves to be a bit more than she can handle.

Shane’s patient goes into early labor, and survives, but her heart is still damaged. Perhaps she will make an appearance later on? Shane remains on Cristina’s good side, for now. Another person on Cristina’s good side? Owen! Their trial of friendship continues when Christina makes him an online dating profile. Yet, as Richard’s party winds down, Owen only has eyes on one person to leave with for the night.

Surprisingly, the most shocking surprise arrives when the US Government decides that they will find a way to work around sharing the sensors so that Callie may continue her research. “We overthrew the government today!” Yes, you did Callie. In a way, at least…
