Grey’s Anatomy 12×14 “Odd Man Out” forced many of the doctors to deal with confrontations they had been trying to avoid.

Richard notices that the attendings are already favoring residents and decides to shake things up, so he has the residents pick new ones out of a hat. This is a good idea in theory, except that it forces some of the doctors to work with others they’ve been trying to avoid. Jo gets paired with Meredith, and Penny with Amelia.

Jo is visibly the most upset at being paired with Meredith, as she’s been worried about Alex choosing Meredith over her. The way that Meredith treats her only makes it worse. First, Meredith tells Jo that she doesn’t have time to catch her up to speed on all her cases. Then she calls Jo by the wrong name in the operating room. Finally, Meredith gets annoyed when Jo calls for the wrong test.

It’s the final straw for Jo and she lets all of her feelings out — including the ones involving Alex. Meredith kind of brushes it off, but Callie and Maggie agree that she treats Jo pretty bad. It seems like Meredith never realized how bad it was before because she’s surprised by their opinion.

Owning up to what she’s done, Meredith apologizes to Jo and says that she is protective of Alex but is rooting for them. This storyline of Jo versus Meredith has been a little tiring, so I’m glad to see that it’s over. Hopefully that means that Jo and Alex can finally move forward in their relationship.

Penny isn’t having an easier time with Amelia, who suggest that Penny either works with another attending or takes the day off. To make matters worse, Penny told Amelia that her patients wife was waiting for an update, but it was actually his mistress. Penny is told only to watch his monitors and nothing else. Riggs encourages Penny to take care of the patient when he starts to crash, but it just makes Amelia even more mad. Once Amelia realizes that Penny actually did everything perfect she begins to soften towards her. I’m not sure if this will change their relationship forever, but it’s definitely a step in the right direction.

Arizona doesn’t have any problem with her new resident, Ben, but she is worried about April. April is still refusing to tell Jackson and doesn’t appear to be interested in really talking about the pregnancy. Arizona tries to tell April that she needs to get the tests done to see if her baby has osteogenesis imperfecta like her first child, but April insists that the baby is fine and does’t want any testing.

When Alex confronts April about this, she says Jackson can’t know because he won’t be able to handle it. They’ve had too much happen to them and doesn’t want Jackson to get hurt again. Despite what she has to say, Alex still thinks April is making it worse.

Instead of waiting, Arizona goes ahead and tells Jackson, but April walks in moments later. Naturally, he’s very upset that he heard it from someone else. I’m not surprised at all this happened, ever since April’s pregnancy was revealed I predicted that he would find out through someone else. Though I am pretty surprised that it’s Arizona who’s telling him, she always seemed way more loyal to April. Does that mean that she’s doing the wrong thing? Not necessarily, she’s also trying to think about the baby in this situation.

After getting bothered by her friends all day about it, Meredith goes to listen to the voicemail from Will Thorpe. Before she can, however, Meredith realizes that he’s right outside of the hospital waiting for her. Will wants to know why she’s been avoiding him, so he shows up to ask her out. I’m really hoping that Meredith takes him up on his offer and doesn’t just brush him off. I’m 100% ready to see Meredith jump back into the dating pool.

Even will all of these storylines coming to a head, the puppies kind of stole the show.
