Grey’s Anatomy 12×13, “All Eyez On Me,” brought some interesting developments in love and surgery.

Most of the episode focused on Meredith, Bailey, Jackson, Callie and Jo, who went to a military hospital to perform an experimental surgery that they only got to practice one time. They went in feeling quite confident, but meeting the patient and seeing what the risks really are seemed to leave them rattled. It’s not surprising, given their plan was to take the man from having two legs to one and taking out part of his hip while they’re at it.

Halfway through the surgery, Callie started freaking out when she realized the plan they had wasn’t going to work. They all gave her space to think, but when they started to run out of time with the stalling, Meredith got to step in and give advice. After the attack, everyone had always been helping her, and now she gets to step into the role, which is refreshing to see.

In other gross surgeries, Ben worried that his patient was crashing in the psych ward and ended up using metal off of a clip board to cut him open. Weber thought they’d lose him in surgery because of it, but Ben was worried that he wouldn’t make it there if he wasn’t opened up right away.

The other residents complained that he was getting away with it because of his marriage to Bailey, but Weber thinks Ben deserves a suspension. By the time Bailey gets back to the hospital she is not happy with Ben, and she’s embarrassed that she has to discipline him.

Of course the other big theme of the episode was the status of relationships. Meredith’s therapist kept bringing up the point that he doesn’t think she wants to be alone anymore, and yet she got defensive when her friends talk about a potential love interest for her. I’m totally proud of Meredith when she gives out her number to the hot doctor at the military hospital. Even if it doesn’t amount to anything, it’s a step in the right direction.

Jackson got annoyed when Jo and Callie teased him about being flirted with by a doctor at the military hospital. Either Jackson isn’t used to the single life yet, or maybe he just doesn’t like it. He barely got to see April in this episode so it’s hard to tell how he’s feeling toward her. April does almost let slip her secret when Weber hears her talking to Arizona about it. It seems all the more likely that Jackson will be finding out about the pregnancy through the grapevine.

Andrew told Maggie that keeping their relationship secret is getting old — and I agree. Maggie, however, looked petrified of going public with their romance. Later, Maggie confessed to Alex that if something ended up happening after they tell everyone she’ll be known as the one that dated the pretty boy. Alex made a good point that the only person that cares is Maggie.

So she made a big deal of telling Riggs that she can’t meet up with him later because she has a date with Andrew. It’s equal parts adorable and funny to watch. The look on Andrew’s face, though, has me thinking that he’s changed his mind.
