The stories in Grey’s Anatomy season 12, episode 6 are starting to repeat. Here are the plots that make us want to pull the plug.

Grey’s Anatomy season 12 is having a bit of an identity crisis. Boasted as a season that would be much lighter than season 11, the series started out of the gate strong with minimal high drama and plenty of fun covers and Miranda Bailey centric moments. But then in episode 5, Callie brought the woman who was on Derek’s case to dinner with Amelia and Meredith.

We’re all for the crazy drama when we tune into Grey’s Anatomy. If you’re still watching the series, that is testament enough to what you are willing to sit through. But things are getting a bit too repetitive in season 12 and it is time to stop making leftovers out of what is left in the fridge and go grocery shopping. At the close of this week’s episode here are three plot lines we would like to toss in the trash, and one we want to save for a rainy day.

Grey Sloan Memorial taking out their anger on Penny

Trudging through the mucky waters of grief, Meredith has every right to still be grieving Derek. In fact the entire hospital does. But taking out her anger on Penny only to come around and put her actions in perspective was a detour that did not need to happen. The baton, it seems, has passed on to Amelia after Meredith ultimately decided that Derek would not appreciate the way that Meredith was behaving. Meredith is able to admit her mistake after talking with Richard and trying to reflect alone with Derek. But now it seems that the rest of the hospital still has to take their time getting used to the idea that Penny is around for the long haul.

If we don’t end this plot point after Amelia gets her moment to test Penny then are we resigned to a “Who hates Penny this week” style show?

Richard feeling guilty about his affair

There is a time and place to bring up the affair with Ellis Grey and what it meant to Richard Webber’s life. But Grey’s Anatomy spent so much time exploring that affair, including flashbacks to the moment Ellis found out when she was pregnant, we do not need to keep spending precious minutes in season 12 repeating the narrative. It’s 2015, he ended his life with Adele on a happy note, he is now married to a beautiful strong woman. It is time for Richard Webber to push forward and get to know Maggie and her history rather than letting his shame dominate the conversation.

April being absolutely crazy

April Kepner, reel it in. Grey’s Anatomy finally tiptoed towards closure for April and Jackson in tonight’s episode, but something is always pulling them in different directions. It seems that every week there is a new situation for April to turn into a conversation about their marriage rather than focus on what is going on around her. This week was a breaking point. Bringing in a small child who needs drastic hand surgery, possibly amputation just to convince Jackson that she believes in him? Sweet idea, but when it comes time to hear that Jackson now has to report to the child that his hands need to be cut off, April’s “fight for what you believe in” attitude fails to impress.

But this is Grey’s Anatomy and Jackson takes the message to heart, choosing to try something new in the OR and eventually saves the boys hands. When will this story line end? With a glimmer of hope through a reconciling hug, maybe soon!

Let’s see more interns!

We’re not just saying we want to see McIntern with his shirt off again. Okay, maybe we are, but what about the other new faces in the program? Now that Grey’s Anatomy is introducing another loose cannon doctor into the mix, Dr. Nathan Riggs brought in by April Kepner, it seems less likely that we will get to know the interns and more likely to see Owen and Nathan go head to head. We want to know more about Andrew DeLuca’s EMT days and his confident hair! We want to know if the ghostly intern is actually a ghost! Sure he got cheese and drove a drunk Arizona home, but is he really a presence on the show?

With only two episodes left until the winter hiatus hits, hopefully Grey’s Anatomy will clean house and give viewers meatier material to chew on in season 12.
