Grey’s Anatomy season 12, episode 5 invites everyone to the table, including the one person Meredith Grey does not have the stomach to handle.

On a scale of one to 10 how awkward was the Sister Chief Dinner at Meredith’s house? Several moments tipped the scale far above a 10, but Grey’s Anatomy has a way of bringing everyone back down to Earth after their emotions get the better of them. Is all forgiven by the end of the night? We’ll talk after that tequila hangover wears off.

Arizona and Penny: 5

Arizona is not feeling the least bit awkward after Penny walks in the door and she heads straight for the bar. Before she can make it back into the dining room to mingle with Penny, Arizona praises the wonders of the pretty, perfect Penny to April, who puts up with her only defense against Jackson.

Once seated around the table, Arizona cannot stop the words from coming out of her mouth, making it especially awkward when those words continue to praise Penny in front of Meredith.

By the end of the evening, Arizona needs a ride home, water, and some aspirin for the morning.

Meredith and the entire party: 10

If one evening with Penny was not enough, leave it to Bailey to announce that Penny is the newest candidate for the residency program at Grey Sloan Memorial. After a night of silence, Meredith finally breaks the cloud of tension around her, confronting Penny directly. Meredith states point blank, “Penny killed my husband. Isn’t that right, Penny?” tipping the awkward well beyond a 10 and bringing the entire dinner to a halt.

April and Jackson: 6

The first social interaction between the two since Jackson’s separation, April retreats to the kitchen and decides to save a dinner party instead of her marriage for a night. The couple eventually do wind up working together to clean up the kitchen and enjoy a civil conversation for the first time since she returned from her final tour. But as they recount the pain that haunted them from their own lost patients, April tries to flip the conversation to highlight their problems from which Jackson politely removes himself.

Jo and Steph: 8

The cold shoulder Edwards offers Jo should have sent her running for a shawl. When Jo finally catches Steph’s ear to apologize, it seems that the two friends are back on track. However, Jo quickly puts her foot in her mouth again when she implies that Steph’s childhood illness explains why she is good at her job. Instead of being supportive and happy that Steph is killing it as a resident, Jo levels the playing field.

Edwards does not take the insult to her character lying down and leaves Jo to deal with her jealousy and shortcomings on her own.

Andrew and Maggie: 7

Maggie has a fire that is burning in her nether regions, but it is not a passion for Andrew. This time, anyway. Rushing back to the hospital to take care of the burn, Maggie is placed under the care of the one person she’d rather not see at the moment: Andrew. He is convinced that she is suffering from a UTI and not an STD, but Maggie has no filter when it comes to firing accusations about his wild sexual activity.

While waiting for the results, Maggie and Andrew get into the gritty details of the dating world, which they both seem to hate. With an uncertain test result keeping them apart, Maggie and Andrew’s flirtatious conversation is more rewarding than any quick hook up.

Amelia and the dinner party: 5

Amelia expresses her public heartbreak, causing everyone else to feel awkward. She does, however, place the entire dinner party in a tense situation by demanding that Penny explain the intricate details of Derek’s death. Finally, when Callie demands that the interrogation stop, Amelia retreats upstairs to unleash a plan of action.

But it is Meredith’s time to fall apart. After attempting to keep most of her emotions inside since Derek’s death, Amelia unwittingly unleashes a flood of anger, frustration, and heartache. The wall that Meredith put up to protect her children finally falls and Meredith kicks Amelia out of her room.

Owen heads into the battlefield to diffuse the ticking time bomb that is Amelia Shepherd. His composure is the last thing Amelia wants to deal with in that moment, so Owen tears down a bit of his brick wall to let Amelia in. Taking his words at face value for tonight, Owen admits that he was glad to hear Cristina was in a plane crash because the alternative would mean that eventually Cristina would choose to leave him. Ouch, Owen.

As awful as Owen’s confession is, it does the trick and Amelia is able to take a deep breath and relax for a moment.

How to deal with the end of an awkward evening:

If you do wind up creating an awkward scene at a dinner party, odds are your best friend and a bottle of tequila are all you need to make it a bit better. That, or hire the woman who killed your husband last year and have her put on your service.

(We’ll stick with the first option, thank you very much.)
