A woman of many talents, Greta Gerwig has been tapped to star in the How I Met Your Mother spinoff, How I Met Your Dad, where she will also produce and write for the show.

Gerwig, who had a stellar 2013 with the release of her critically-acclaimed Frances Ha, will helm the series as Sally. The recently-divorced character is described as a “female Peter Pan who has never grown up and has no idea of where she’s going in life.” She’ll lean on her circle of friends for advice and support through the inevitable divorce.

In addition to co-creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, Emily Spivey, creator of the short-lived NBC comedy Up All Night, and Pamela Fryman, director of the How I Met Your Dad pilot, will receive executive producer credits. Gerwig will also have a producers credit.

How I Met Your Dad will be Greta Gerwig’s first role on television beyond her voice-over work for the Adult Swim Show China, IL. You may recognize her from films such as the aforementioned Frances Ha and No Strings Attached.

You can read about the characters that will surround Gerwig’s Sally here.

It is interesting that Gerwig would take this role when she is usually accustomed to more theatrical characters, but we are confident she will be able to capture Sally’s voice in a way that Josh Radnor did with Ted at the start of HIMYM. This could also indicate a tonal change for the show, taking on a sharper tongue and more sarcastic wit than HIMYM.

Of course, all How I Met Your Dad announcements are contingent on the show actually getting picked up. But given what a stronghold HIMYM had on CBS for nearly nine years, we expect executives are eager to keep Bays and Thomas on the payroll.

Are you excited to see Greta Gerwig star in HIMYD as Sally?
