Lady Bird director Greta Gerwig is gearing up for her next project, this time directing a film adaptation of the classic novel, Little Women.

Reports are swirling that actor, writer, and director Greta Gerwig is set to flex her directorial muscles in the latest film adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s timeless novel, Little Women. Adapting Alcott’s novel, another coming-of-age story of young women, is a great follow up for Gerwig after the success of Lady Bird. Plus, it’s going to be really exciting to see Gerwig’s unique directorial eye on such a beloved story.

Of course, Gerwig’s appointment as director isn’t the only newsworthy thing about this new adaptation. The cast that is rumored to be in talks to appear in the film is not only a crop of A-list actors, but also provides a mini Lady Bird reunion as well.

According to Variety, Lady Bird alums Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chalamet are in the running to star in the film as well as Emma Stone and Meryl Streep. The specific roles that each actor is being tested for are still being kept under wraps. However, it’s safe to bet Streep is being considered for the role of Marmee March, and Variety reports that actresses are being tested against Emma Stone for the role of Beth.

Columbia Pictures has been working on developing this film for some time, initially signing Gerwig on to rewrite the script. However, after her massive success directing Lady Bird, Columbia asked Gerwig to also serve as the film’s director.

While the timeline for this film is unclear, with such a talented cast and a coveted director, it’s likely that Columbia will move quickly through production to make this film a reality. We’ll keep you posted as more news about this movie breaks.
