A new short film showcases the friendship between the Harry Potter series’ Dumbledore and Grindelwald when Ariana is accidentally killed.

The story is touched on by author J.K. Rowling in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows when Aberforth tells the story to Harry, Ron, and Hermione, but the films never showed it first hand.

Enter “The Greater Good,” released on YouTube Tuesday after a screening in Los Angeles on Monday night. The 17-minute film depicts Dumbledore, Grindelwald, Aberforth, and Ariana on a beach during the final moments of an important friendship.

Complete with special effects and costumes that are loyal to those seen in the movie, “The Greater Good” includes heartbreaking, subtle references to Dumbledore’s romantic interest in Grindelwald. Call us shallow, but thanks to this video we now understand why Dumbledore was into him.

As told in the series by Rowling and depicted above, Ariana’s death comes as an accident when she intervenes during Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s fight over the Deathly Hallows and the latter’s intentions.

The duel between the two wizards was an important part of the Dumbledore family’s tragic history, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the creators of this video spent plenty of time within the moment.

Thanks to Adriana for the tip.
