With the Oscars just over a week away, the team behind Gravity’s visual effects have released a video featuring the stunning work that is receiving critical acclaim.

Gravity has been nominated for 10 Oscars this year, and while Best Actress and Movie are the more coveted awards, their nomination for Best Visual Effects may be its most important.

The film takes place entirely in space and this resulted in an incredible amount of visual effects work that insiders say has never been done or seen before. Watch the visual magic below as the Gravity VFX team shows us just how much work goes into creating each beautifully crafted shot.

Gravity is up against The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, Iron Man 3, The Lone Ranger and Star Trek Into Darkness in this year’s Best Visual Effects category. The film is a lock to win the Oscar this year for Best Visual Effects and could be on its way to a Best Picture or Actress win.

It’s easy to forget just how much goes into the spectacular worlds we see at the movie theater. It’s exciting to see videos like these that remind us of the hundreds of artists behind-the-scenes that make it all possible.

Director Alfonso Cuarón revealed during the film’s promotion that it took six years to make Gravity, citing its incredible wire work and visual effects for the extended shoot.

The studio began to worry about its $100 million dollar gamble when Cuarón didn’t have much to show to them for months or years at a time, but it paid off as the film pulled in over $700 million at the box office.

He says the studio even wanted to make major story changes but he wouldn’t budge. The director says, “You have to understand that in this is the process… in many ways I don’t know how they did it. Because they put a lot of money [into the film] and they couldn’t see absolutely anything for months, years.”

We hope Gravity is awarded this year for impressing so many moviegoers and critics with its space-thriller. We also look forward to finding out if it will grab any other Oscars in the nine other categories where it’s been nominated.
