A new trailer for the upcoming astronaut film Gravity starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock has been released, and it might be the most intense trailer of all time.

Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity stars George Clooney as an astronaut on his last flight before retirement and Sandra Bullock as a brand new medical engineer on her very first flight. After their shuttle is destroyed, they drift off into space together.

This trailer shows the destruction of the shuttle, and it has to be one of the most frightening and intense trailers ever. Cuarón’s use of a single shot trailer is very effective. It keeps you right in the moment.

Sci-fi is often ignored at the Academy Awards, but it is already being predicted that Gravity will pick up several awards this year. Gravity looks like nothing short of masterful filmmaking, and it deserves the recognition.

Update: A second trailer that takes place immediately after the one above has also been released. This trailer shows Sandra Bullock drifting alone and unable to get in contact with anyone. It only adds to the intensity and fear of the above trailer. Unfortunately for Bullock’s character, “In space, no one can hear you scream.” (Sorry, we had to.)

Official synopsis:

Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) in command of his last flight before retiring. But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone–tethered to nothing but each other and spiraling out into the blackness. The deafening silence tells them they have lost any link to Earth…and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space.

‘Gravity’ will be released on October 4.
