Jada Pinkett Smith has been tapped to co-star opposite the recently cast Ben McKenzie in Fox’s Batman drama Gotham as a major villain.

Jada Pinkett Smith will be playing the character Fish Mooney, “an imposing, hotheaded and notoriously sadistic gangster boss and nightclub owner with street smarts and almost extra-sensory abilities to read people like an open book who is not one to be crossed.”

Fox’s Gotham TV show has ramped up its casting as of late, with Ben McKenzie being cast in the lead role of detective Jim Gordon.

Fox executive Kevin Reilly was recently asked how Gotham was going to be marketed, since it’s a Batman television show without Batman. He revealed that Batman will be in the TV show, but only as a young boy.

Reilly reports that they’re playing with the story and casting currently, but Bruce Wayne will be definitely be involved as a “young boy.” His guess would be that the character would be around 12.

Now that Ben McKenzie has been cast in the lead role, we know that it will take place when detective Gordon is in his late 20’s.

Director Danny Cannon has signed on to direct the pilot. Cannon has been a director and producer on the TV show Nikita, as well as many of the CSI TV shows.

Created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, detective James Gordon first appeared in the very first Batman comic in 1939. The character’s most famous portrayal was in director Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, where he was played by Gary Oldman.

Smith has been focusing on her children’s careers lately, but she’s a great actress and one that can easily pull off a strong boss of the underworld. Her career started in television, with an NBC comedy titled A Different World.

We’re excited to see what the talented actress will do with the villain of Fish Mooney in Fox’s Batman drama Gotham.

Thanks, Deadline.
