With Ben McKenzie being recently cast as detective Gordon, Fox has released additional casting announcements for their new Gotham TV series.

Southland actor Ben McKenzie will star as Jim Gordon in the Batman based TV series and Fox has announced who will be playing The Penguin, Alfred, Captain Essen and Gordon’s fiancée Barbara Kean.

Robin Lord Taylor, who had a small role in The Walking Dead, will be playing Oswald Cobblepot – better known as The Penguin. Camelot actor Sean Pertwee will play the 12-year-old Bruce Wayne’s beloved butler, Alfred, while Zabryna Guevara will portray Gordon’s police Captain.

Being Human’s Erin Richards has been cast as Gordon’s fiancée, Barbara Kean. There are also reports that casting announcements for The Riddler and Catwoman may be announced as well.

In case you’re curious about the new characters, check out their official descriptions below (via Variety) as they’ll appear in Fox’s Gotham TV series along with the actors portraying them:

The Penguin: With the brains of a chess grandmaster and the morals of a jackal, Oswald Cobblepot is a low-level psychopath who hides his sadistic lust for power behind an exquisitely polite demeanor.

Alfred Pennyworth: A tough-as-nails ex-marine from East London, Alfred Pennyworth has loyally served the Waynes. Now, in the wake of their tragic deaths, he’s fiercely protective of the young Bruce Wayne.

Captain Essen: Gordon’s boss at the GCPD Homicide Squad, Captain Essen balances the two worlds of police and politics with a Machiavellian skill that’s as much corporate litigator as cop.

Barbara Kean: A sophisticated emergency room doctor, Barbara is the fiancée of James Gordon, joyful but with an edge of vulnerability. She stands by her future husband, which can be difficult in a world as corrupt as Gotham.

Fox executive Kevin Reilly was recently asked how Gotham was going to be marketed, since it’s a Batman television show without Batman. He revealed that Batman will be in the TV show, but as a very young Bruce Wayne.

Reilly said, “Batman is in it, as young Bruce Wayne. This is an origin story. This is what I love about it. This is not like some of the things where you’ve bought a franchise, but then you have a bunch of characters no one’s ever heard of, or an offshoot that we make up. This is all of the classic Batman characters, with a young Bruce Wayne, with Detective Gordon before he’s Commissioner Gordon, with the Penguin, with the Riddler, and with the Joker.”

Director Danny Cannon has signed on to direct the pilot. He’s been a director and producer on the TV show Nikita, as well as many of the CSI TV shows.

Cannon is an interesting choice, and we look forward to seeing how the pilot plays out now that many of the characters have been cast. Production is set to start in the next few weeks.
