Gotham season 3, episode 6, “Follow the White Rabbit” saw Gordon pushed to the edge as Jervis tortured him with an impossible decision.

‘Gotham’ season 3, episode 6 recap:

The day starts out just like any other for Gordon, he disagrees with Valerie when she bothers him for help with information on Alice’s blood. Valerie knows that Lee is the one at GCPD working on the case and hopes that Gordon will use his connections to get an interview for her. She also can’t help but tease him on about being a horrible private investigator.

Once Valerie leaves, things take a turn for the worse. Jervis sends one of his helpers with a message for Gordon, and the fellow certainly has a distinctive look with his white blonde hair. When Gordon arrives at the location the man leads him to, Jervis calls a payphone and promises to Gordon that he’ll have gone mad by the end of the day when he’s forced to face who he really is.

Jervis starts of the torture by making Gordon choose between saving a newly wed couple that’s about to jump off the bridge. Or save the little boy in the middle of the street about to be run over by the truck. They’re all under Jervis’ control and won’t save themselves. Once Gordon sees the boy about to be run over, he races to him and gets him to safety. That means that he doesn’t have time to get to the couple as they plummet to their death. Jervis isn’t done with him yet though and gives Gordon the next location to get to.

After Gordon leaves, Bullock and Barnes arrive on the spot. The little boy is back to himself and recounts the story of how Gordon saved him. They quickly figure out that Jervis is behind the whole thing. Especially when they find the white haired man still nearby and take him into custody.

When Gordon arrives at the next location he finds a telescope that shows him Jervis is nearby. But when he doesn’t listen to Jervis, and keeps hanging up the phone, he just angers him further. Jervis isn’t one to be messed around with especially when he’s there to show Gordon that he has taken Valerie.

Without another clue to follow Gordon goes to see Barbara. She admits to Gordon that Jervis did come and see her looking for information. Naturally, Barbara was all too willing to give up all of the details on their history. Including the time that she abducted Gordon and Lee as her hostages in the church.

Worried about Lee’s safety, Gordon calls her cell phone only to have Jervis answer it. He’s already taken Lee as well and now he has both of the women that were last romantically linked to Gordon. With no other option Gordon goes to the next location that Jervis gives him and finds two men strapped down to electrocution chairs.

In order to try and torture Gordon further Jervis demands that he chooses between the men on who will live and who will die. The catch is that one of them is a pediatrician and the other is a news reporter. Gordon refuses and when Barnes arrives they try to cut the power but aren’t fast enough so both men die.

Barnes promises Gordon that they’ll find Lee and Valerie in time to save them, but Gordon is visibly worried. At the GCPD Gordon sees that the man with white hair is still repeating the same message he first gave Gordon. When Gordon asks him how to get to the end, the man writes down the final address for him and it’s Lee’s apartment. Mario arrives and wants to go know what’s going on. Surprisingly, he agrees to Gordon’s plan to take on Jervis without the help of the GCPD.

At Lee’s home, Jervis sets up a twisted tea party for them. Gordon plays it cool and goes along with Jervis’ retelling of how Gordon is responsible for Alice’s death. Meanwhile, Mario gets into the basement and grabs his gun. He’s able to sneak up on Jervis only to learn that his gun was filled with blanks when Jervis found it earlier.

Gordon tries to mess with Jervis by torturing him with what Alice divulged before her death. How Jervis had thoughts about her no brother should and that she would have rather died then be in this possession. Jervis nearly kills Gordon for this, but then remembers his mission. He forces Gordon to make a choice on who is going to die, Lee or Valerie. With the pressure of a countdown Gordon tells Jervis to shoot Lee so he does the opposite and shoots Valerie.

Jervis flees the scene, and Lee calls for help while Gordon applies pressure to the wound in Valerie’s stomach. They’re able to rush her to the hospital where Mario takes her into surgery. Lee and Gordon wait anxiously for news, but Lee understandably doesn’t want to talk about the decision he made.

I can’t help but wonder if Gordon knew that who ever he told Jervis to shoot, wouldn’t be the one to have it happen. Even if Gordon likes Valerie I just can’t imagine that he would sacrifice that woman that once carried his child. I wouldn’t be surprised if Lee and Valerie come to the same conclusion as well. No matter how many times Lee and Gordon try to downplay their connection, it’s undeniable.

Elsewhere in Gotham, Penguin came to term with his romantic feelings for Nygma. With the realization that Nygma might be his true love, he decides to confess. The timing is hard for him to figure out though. In the morning, Nygma apologizes to Penguin for Butch getting away. Of course Penguin isn’t mad at him and says he has something important to tell him, only to get scared and lie that he forgot what he was going to say.

Later, they go on a visit to a school in the city, and after Nygma compliments his way with children Penguin invites him over for dinner. Penguin says that they have something important to discuss so Nygma agrees to bring wine over.

That night while Penguin is waiting for Nygma he practices what to say. At the same time Nygma is at a store picking up wine when he runs into someone hauntingly familiar. The woman looks so much like Kristen he’s startled at first, then relieved to hear its not her. His interest in her is piqued when she has a riddle of her own to tell.

This latest development doesn’t bode well for Penguin. It isn’t shown if he ever talks to Nygma that night. Chances are though, once he hears that Nygma is interested in someone else he isn’t going to admit his feelings at all. Penguin has had enough heartbreak and isn’t going to want to chance losing Nygma either.
