Leslie made an announcement tonight on Gotham that’s a game changer, but what does it mean for the future?
On the Gotham season 2 mid-season finale, Leslie revealed to Gordon that she is pregnant with his child. This isn’t too shocking, given that Morena Baccarin is pregnant in real life. So the writers had to either write it into the show or try to hide it. The question is, what will the writers choose to do with the baby given Gordon’s history in the comics?
Gordon is tied to a few different children in the comics, including Tony Gordon, James Gordon Jr, and Barbara Gordon.
Tony Gordon was the first of Gordon’s children to be introduced to the comics. However, his character didn’t last long and was eventually replaced by James Gordon Jr. In the comics, James Gordon Jr. is born to Barbara E. Gordon and James Gordon. His character is portrayed as a sociopath who lacks the ability to empathize with others.
Barbara Gordon is the third child usually tied to Gordon (although sometimes she is just his niece), and sometimes Barbara E. Gordon is portrayed as her mother. Barbara eventually goes on to join Batman and becomes Batgirl. She is described as extremely intelligent and a martial artist. After being paralyzed by the Joker, she works as the Oracle to help Batman with espionage network. Once she begins walking again, Barbara goes back to her role as Batgirl.
When Barbara Kean’s character was written for Gotham, it was clear they intended her to be the first wife of James Gordon seen in the comics. However, her character has taken such a great turn since the first season we’re no longer sure if Barbara Kean will eventually marry Gordon. It’s possible, but right now it’s not in the foreseeable future. So will the writers of Gotham choose to make an entirely new character out of Gordon and Leslie’s child or will they go with one already known?
Honestly, it would be awesome to see Leslie and Gordon have the child that goes on to become Batgirl. However, it would also be super awkward for Leslie to have a baby girl and then name it after her future husband’s ex. Unless something fatal happened to Barbara and they did it in her honor, but that would still be pretty weird.
If the writers were to go with a character that already exists, it’s more likely it would be James Gordon Jr. They could continue with the storyline that he is a sociopath and make it pretty interesting, especially if the child were to show signs early on. It would only make Gordon’s life dealing with crime all the more dramatic.
Then again, the writers could create a whole new character and do whatever they wanted. They could make the child totally normal, crazy, or a future vigilante. The possibilities are endless and we can’t wait to see what they come up with!
