The Goonies 2 has been rumored for a long time, but the director says it will be made. Goonies never say die!
When a TMZ cameraman was pestering Richard Donner, Donner surprised him with a surprising story; Donner will be returning to make a Goonies sequel!
When asked if he would ever make another comic book movie, Donner replied, “Well, if you call The Goonies a comic book. We’re doing a sequel.” When asked if the original stars would return, Donner said, “Hopefully all of them.”

Though Donner could have just said whatever to get the cameraman out of his face, it looks like he was being truthful. Ain’t it Cool News did some digging and heard that the film is indeed going forward with Donner, Steven Spielberg, and Chris Columbus producing. They’re looking for a director and writer. The plot will apparently center around the original Goonies’ kids with cameos from the original cast.
Five years ago Screen Rant had linked to a report that said the Goonies sequel was on the horizon, but nothing had happened to build toward it.
In 2010, Josh Brolin said that there wasn’t one in the works.
“People keep asking me over and over about a sequel,” Brolin told Extra TV. “I saw Steven Spielberg [the film’s producer] on the street about a month and a half ago, and I asked the reality. I hear there is a script, yes, but there’s no talk about doing a Goonies sequel at this very moment. And that’s the first time I’ve been truthful about that answer… ever.”
Apparently the last four years have allowed for a change. Donner didn’t say he’s thinking about making it; he said he is making it.
Hopefully The Goonies 2 will see the whole cast return like Donner hopes. The original starred Sean Austin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Corey Feldman, Kerri Green, Martha Plimpton, and Jonathan Ke Quan. Some of these actors haven’t worked much in front of the screen in some time, but they’d likely want to come back for a Goonies sequel.
