After much controversy with Apple and Google over the native Maps app on iOS 6, Google has finally pushed its official Google Maps app to the iOS App Store.

In case you missed the controversy, let’s recap. This summer Apple released the latest major iOS update: iOS 6. The update was the launch of Apple’s own native maps app that replaced the long-standing Google Maps service that was shipped with the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad since their inception. Unfortunately, Apple’s Maps app lacked several of the key features that iOS user came to know, most notably correct results of locations.

This week, Australian police warned iOS Maps users to be aware of an incorrect waypoint that would lead people to the middle of nowhere rather than their intended destination. Australian police went as far as naming it a “life threatening” situation.

Apple CEO Tim Cook went as far as to say that Apple “screwed up” with the release of its native Maps app and is “putting the weight of the company behind correcting it” in a recent interview with NBC’s Brian Williams. In the months following the public outcry of disappointment in Apple’s Maps app, several key figures in iOS production, including senior vice president of iOS software Scott Forstall, parted ways with Apple.

But worry no more iOS users – Google has come to your rescue. As of 11 p.m. EST last night, Google has officially released its long-rumored Google Maps app to the iOS store essentially reinstating the Maps experience iOS users have come to know.

It’s unfortunate that Apple, a company so many people rely on for its attention to detail, would let a huge misstep like this happen.
