The Golden Globe’s 2016 nominations were announced this morning, revealing some exciting nominees across many different TV shows and some of the best films of the year.

BEST TV SERIES – DRAMA

Empire
Game of Thrones
Mr. Robot
Narcos
Outlander

Empire has been one of the most talked about — and highest rated — TV shows of the past year, with Outlander also becoming a pretty big hit. Game of Thrones is always a favorite, but we expect to see one of the newer shows win the big award for the night, since there’s been so many great seasons this year (Mr. Robot was particularly good).

Empire has gained two nominations this year, while Game of Thrones has four nominations. The latter won for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role when Peter Dinklage won a Globe back in 2012.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS – TV DRAMA

Caitriona Balfe – Outlander
Viola Davis – How to Get Away With Murder
Eva Green – Penny Dreadful
Taraji P. Henson – Empire
Robin Wright – House of Cards

Empire snagged another nomination in the best actress category thanks to Taraji P. Henson, but we think Viola Davis’ performance in How to Get Away With Murder may earn her the globe this year. She’s been excellent in the show, but there’s some stiff competition with Eva Green in Penny Dreadful as well.

Eva Green wasn’t nominated last year for Showtime’s period horror show Penny Dreadful, but it looks like she’s finally gotten the Globes’ attention this year. She and Viola Davis should be the frontrunners, and with Davis receiving four Golden Globe nominations previously, it’d be nice to see her finally bring one home.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR – TV DRAMA

Jon Hamm – Mad Men
Rami Malek – Mr Robot
Wagner Moura – Narcos
Bob Odenkirk – Better Call Saul
Liev Schreiber – Ray Donovan

Jon Hamm is getting used to the Golden Globe parties with this being his sixth nomination (he has one win). He’s nominated for his role in Mad Men again this year, and while he seems like the safe call since this is the last time the series can be nominated, we imagine Bob Odenkirk has a great shot at winning the Golden Globe for his role in Better Call Saul as the shady lawyer he played in Breaking Bad.

This is Bob Odenkirk’s first Golden Globe nomination, which is surprising. We would have expected him to have nabbed one during Breaking Bad’s reign in its heyday.

BEST TV SERIES – COMEDY/MUSICAL

Casual
Mozart in the Jungle
Silicon Valley
Transparent
Orange is the New Black
Veep

In the best TV Series – Comedy/Musical category, we find quite a few new shows. We imagine it’s possible for Veep or Transparent to take home the Globe, but Orange is the New Black looks to be a lock to win.

Why? Orange is the New Black is up to six Golden Globe nominations, but no one has yet to take home a win from Netflix’s hit show. While the buzz isn’t as big as it was during the first season, we still think the show has a shot to take home Best TV Series.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS – TV MUSICAL/COMEDY

Rachel Bloom – Crazy Ex Girlfriend
Jamie Lee Curtis – Scream Queens
Julia Louis-Dreyfus – Veep
Gina Rodriguez – Jane the Virgin
Lily Tomlin – Grace and Frankie

In the best performance by an actress TV Musical/Comedy category, we see Julia Louis-Dreyfus from Veep, and then quite a few new names. Jamie Lee Curtis has earned praise for her role in Scream Queens despite the series suffering from low ratings, so this could be a tossup category, where we just won’t know until the Globes air.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus has had eight total Golden Globe nominations over the years thanks to Veep and Seinfeld. She won for the latter in 1994.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR – TV MUSICAL OR COMEDY

Aziz Ansari – Master of None
Gael García Bernal – Mozart in the Jungle
Rob Lowe – The Grinder
Patrick Stewart – Blunt Talk
Jeffrey Tambor – Transparent

In the male category we see a bit of a surprise: the highly talented comedian/actor Aziz Ansari was nominated for his brand new Netflix show Master of None. The category also includes favorites Rob Lowe and Patrick Stewart, which should make for an interesting vote.

BEST MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA

Carol
Mad Max: Fury Road
The Revenant
Room
Spotlight

The best motion picture drama category is stuffed with incredible films. We’ve yet to see The Revenant or Spotlight hit wide release, which means the average moviegoer has probably only seen Mad Max: Fury Road in this list. This isn’t a bad thing, especially considering many felt it was one of the best films of the year.

What’s more interesting is just how diverse this category is this year. With Mad Max: Fury Road going up against a delicate film like Carol, it should be an interesting year for the voters when so many different types of films are up for the same category.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA

Cate Blanchett – Carol
Brie Larson – Room
Rooney Mara – Carol
Saoirse Ronan – Brooklyn
Alicia Vikander – The Danish Girl

Alicia Vikander: Get that name into your head. She was in Ex Machina this year as well, and she stars opposite Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl. Vikander is going to be the next big actress in Hollywood, and a good start would be winning a Golden Globe for best performance by an actress in a motion picture – drama. She’s insanely talented, magnetic on screen, and her performance in The Danish Girl is nothing short of amazing.

Cate Blanchett, who has nine nominations and three wins at the Globes, will give Vikander a good run with her performance in Carol, but we hope it’s Vikander’s year, as she deserves the recognition after such incredible performances.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA

Bryan Cranston – Trumbo
Leonardo DiCaprio – The Revenant
Michael Fassbender – Steve Jobs
Eddie Redmayne – The Danish Girl
Will Smith – Concussion

Like a few other categories, there’s still a few films yet to hit wide release included here, but rumors are that this will finally be Leonardo DiCaprio’s year. He’s incredible in The Revenant, and while he has some stiff competition, this role is beyond perfect for the actor. He should see a win here, but our next choice would be Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl.

Eddie Redmayne picked up the best actor in 2015, and it wouldn’t surprise us if he was able to pick up his second straight Golden Globe for his role in The Danish Girl.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA

Jane Fonda – Youth
Jennifer Jason Leigh – The Hateful Eight
Helen Mirren – Trumbo
Alicia Vikander – Ex Machina
Kate Winslet – Steve Jobs

We’ve already mentioned that Alicia Vikander should have some big wins this year with her role in The Danish Girl, but she’s nominated for another Globe in Ex Machina in the Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama.

Her competition is Dame Helen Mirren in Trumbo, who has a massive 12 nominations and two wins. That’s nothing to sneeze at, so we look forward to finding out who wins this tight race.

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR IN A MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA

Paul Dano – Love & Mercy
Idris Elba – Beasts of No Nation
Mark Rylance – Bridge of Spies
Michael Shannon – 99 Homes
Sylvester Stallone – Creed

Best Supporting Actor – Drama is a bit of a tossup, but early rumblings suggest we might be surprised with Sylvester Stallone winning for his role in Creed, where he stars again as his alter ego, Rocky, and trains his old opponent’s son, played by the highly talented Michael B. Jordan.

It’s said to be Stallone’s best performance to date, and while we think of him as purely an action star, this could be a huge turning point for the actor. This nomination gives him two total Golden Globe nominations and no wins, along with two Oscar nominations and no wins. Despite what people may think of the action star, he’s shown he’s capable of solid performances, and his role in Creed may finally prove he’s not just an action star.

BEST MOTION PICTURE – MUSICAL OR COMEDY

The Big Short
Joy
The Martian
Spy
Trainwreck

Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy is also a bit of a take a guess category. None of the films really stood out this year, but we could see Joy winning despite early reviews. Jennifer Lawrence supposedly put on a solid performance again with director David O. Russell.

Jennifer Lawrence has been nominated for four Golden Globes, with two wins for American Hustle and Silver Linings Playbook. Both films were also directed by David O. Russell.

BEST MOTION PICTURE – ANIMATED

Anomalisa
The Good Dinosaur
Inside Out
The Peanuts Movie
Shaun the Sheep Movie

The Good Dinosaur and Inside Out may be battling this category out for the win. The two films were great, and while we’d give the edge to The Good Dinosaur, it’s hard to know until we’re closer to the Golden Globes.

BEST DIRECTOR

Todd Haynes – Carol
Alejandro González Iñárritu – The Revenant
Tom McCarthy – Spotlight
George Miller – Mad Max: Fury Road
Ridley Scott – The Martian

Alejandro González Iñárritu may move right from his Oscar win for Birdman last year to another award win for his film The Revenant. The film was spectacular, and brought out one of DiCaprio’s best performances, but he has some stiff competition with George Miller and his excellent film Mad Max: Fury Road.

This will bring Alejandro González Iñárritu up to four Golden Globe nominations, where he won his first last year for Birdman’s screenplay. This is the first Golden Globe nomination for George Miller, and it’s possible he could edge out the other nominees because his film was so uniquely shot and groundbreaking.

BEST SCREENPLAY

Emma Donoghue – Room
Tom McCarthy, Josh Singer – Spotlight
Charles Randolph, Adam McKay – The Big Short
Aaron Sorkin – Steve Jobs
Quentin Tarantino – The Hateful Eight

Screenplay is always a bit difficult to pick, but with these nominations, we have a feeling Quentin Tarantino may get the win with his script for The Hateful Eight, which is another excellent western from a director who continues to push past barriers in Hollywood. This is Tarantino’s sixth Golden Globe nomination, and he’s won two for Django Unchained and Pulp Fiction.

Aaron Sorkin could have had a shot, but Steve Jobs didn’t receive the anticipated reception the studio expected, so we imagine that may hurt his award chances. This is Sorkin’s sixth nomination, winning one back in 2010 for The Social Network.

We look forward to finding out who the big winners are during the 2016 Golden Globes. Let us know who you think may win during these early stages of the predictions.
