The 2017 Golden Globes honored some of the best films and TV series of the past year, but HBO’s many nominations for Westworld, Game of Thrones and more led to zero wins.

For many years, Game of Thrones and Veep have guaranteed HBO’s success at most award shows. But at the 2017 Golden Globes, the network — which went in with 14 nominations — failed to best any of the competition, and had to leave empty-handed.

Considering how many nominations it got, it hardly feels like failure, and yet HBO programming president Casey Bloys calls it an “off-year” for the network, when commenting on the results to The Hollywood Reporter.

“On the one hand, I’m very proud of the 14 nominations. On the other hand, it’s always more fun to win,” says Bloys.

“But we’re proud of the shows. You win some, you lose some; you have to look forward at the things we have coming up. That’s the way it goes sometimes; we had a good Emmys [but] had an off-year at the Golden Globes. It happens.”

Newcomer Westworld, despite being a critical hit and scoring a number of Critics’ Choice awards earlier in the awards season, did not manage to propel the network to Golden Globes success. But, as Bloys notes, the Emmys reeled in a sizeable handful of trophies, with big wins for Veep, Last Week Tonight, Game of Thrones and more.
