Godzilla vs. Kong, a showdown between two of cinema’s most iconic monsters, has been pushed back to the end of 2020, according to reports.

Godzilla vs. Kong is set to be a huge staple in the growing cinematic universe of Legendary’s monster universe. However, it is being reported that the film’s release date has been pushed back.

As Variety explains, the movie’s release date has been moved from March 13, 2020 to November 20, 2020. So what is the cause for the delay?

As of now, there isn’t an official statement regarding the move of the release date for Godzilla vs. Kong. However, with the previous movie in the franchise Godzilla: King of Monsters underperforming at the box office, raking in $384 million worldwide when the movie had a $200 million budget, it is likely that the studio is using the extra time to examine both the movie and the franchise as a whole, and make any necessary changes or redirections to ensure more box office bucks.

And taking a bit more time to ensure the movie is perfect makes sense. These big-budget sci-fi flicks are only getting more and more expensive to make, and the stakes are getting higher and higher for movie studios. It would make sense that Legendary would want to take a bit more time to ensure they are taking the film and the franchise in a profitable direction.

Of course, by moving the release date back, Godzilla vs. Kong is going to be facing down a huge contender at the box office. On November 6, 2020, one of Marvel’s most hotly-anticipated new movies, Eternals, will hit the big screen.

One thing is for sure, while the stakes might be higher for Godzilla vs. Kong as it faces off against an MCU flick, moviegoers are certainly going to have a lot of fun movies to check out during the holiday season next year.
