Things are about to get even more interesting for Abuelita when Netflix’s One Day at a Time returns for season three!

According to Vulture, Netflix revealed that iconic musician Gloria Estefan will officially be appearing on the third season of One Day at a Time and that she’ll be sharing some poignant scenes with fellow latinx icon, Rita Moreno.

Estefan is joining the cast as a character named Mirtha who is none other than Abuelita Lydia’s (Moreno) baby sister.

Family ties might run strong amongst familia Alvarez, but it doesn’t sound as though the sisterly reunion we’re set to get in season two will come without some hitches in the road.

On top of being Lydia’s baby sister, Mirtha is also described as being her big sister’s arch-nemesis.

We’ve gotten a taste of just how well Lydia can hold a grudge in seasons one and two, so we’re sure we’re in for some pretty hilarious moments between the two sisters this coming season.

We’d be lying if we said we aren’t hoping that the rivalry between the pair comes to a head in the form of an epic dance/sing-off wherein both Moreno and Estefan get to show off their seriously impressive talents!

As for Estefan, she’s no stranger to the hit Netflix series that’s captured the hearts of many for it’s poignant portrayal of diversity and it’s penchant for tackling tough issues.

The legendary musician actually performs One Day at a Time’s theme song which was produced by the artist’s husband, notable record producer Emilio Estefan.

Currently there’s no word on when season 3 of the Netflix sit-com is set to return, but we’re sure we’re not the only ones who’ll be be looking forward to binge watching it when it hits the online streaming platform!
