There was a child ingenue on Glee tonight who made season 1 Rachel Berry look pleasant and polite. And it was amazing. Check out our recap of Glee season 6, episode 9 “Child Star.”

The show opens with Sue screaming at the gym class, which includes Roderick, who’s unable to climb a rope. Sue screams some insults before Beiste intervenes. Spencer finds Roderick’s weight to be an issue for the glee club before he interrupts Roderick, who awkwardly flirted with one of his friends.

Sue asks the glee club to help the superintendent’s nephew Myron put together a bar mitzvah show. Before anyone can get a word in, Myron launches into a full-fledged performance of Destiny’s Child’s “Lose My Breath,” complete with rip away outfits. Myron offers for the glee club to be the opening act at his bar mitzvah, and Sue accepts on their behalf.

Mason invites Jane to get bread sticks at Breadstix before Madison interrupts and says he can’t afford to eat carbs ahead of show choir performances. Mason asks Roderick to ask Jane out so that he can distract her so he can get with Jane. It’s all very complicated.

Meanwhile, Rachel and Will talk about getting the glee club pumped up about the bar mitzvah performance but no one seems particularly excited. “Are we actually going to sing or are you about to announce another alumnus to walk through the door?” asks Kitty.

Sue tells Will, Sam, Beiste and Rachel about working with Myron, and how terrible he is. Apparently Myron wants them to be back up dancers for his big event and unfortunately for them they all reluctantly agree.

In the gym Spencer is screaming at Roderick like a drill Sargent, but Roderick doesn’t take it too well, noting that he has spent his entire life hearing insults like this. “No one wants to get close to you because you’re a dick,” screams Roderick before storming out of the gym.

Mason tells Madison that he wants to sing with Jane, but she insists that he shouldn’t and that he doesn’t want to. Mason fights back and they have a full blown meltdown in the cafeteria. Jane sees it all goes down and says that she doesn’t want to sing with Mason after all.

Later, Spencer has a dreamy montage about his crush while he sings “Friday I’m In Love” by The Cure. After the performance, Spencer gets into an argument about having to potentially work with Roderick, calling him a quitter. Roderick retorts with, “Yeah and maybe you can try not being a dick.” Rachel, their faculty leader, turns around to look at them with her jaw dropped. It would have been nice to see Rachel reprimanding Roderick for his inappropriate behavior, but we never saw it on the show.

At the bar mitzvah, Mason performs “Break Free” while Madison and Jane exchange awkward glances from opposite wings of the stage. Backstage, Madison says she was terrified and jealous because she couldn’t stand the fact that she wasn’t the only girl in his life anymore but that she is happy for him and ready to let go. They finally have a heart-to-heart filmed and written in the exact tone of a typical Glee breakup. We kept reminding ourselves that these two are siblings, which made it all the funnier. In fact, it was very similar to last week’s scene with Mike and Tina, following Tina’s random proposal.

Backstage, Myron gets stuck in a stage pod hanging from the ceiling. Spencer calls on Roderick to wiggle up the rope to help get him down. Somehow Roderick manages to get all the way up the rope and fixes the situation. “Sometimes, in situations, even babies can move cars,” says Spencer. Oh. Okay.

Sue and Will get into an argument about the choreography backstage before their big performance. Some where are exchanged and slow-motion Sue jumps on him like a jungle beast.

Spencer’s ukulele playing lover boy tells Spencer that he’s really hot and he’s interested. They share a kiss, and Spencer convinces him to join the glee club. This lover boy turns out to have a name: Allister.

For the final number of the bar mitzvah, Rachel, Sue, Will, Sam, Beiste, and the New Directions perform “Break Free” with Myron. It’s all kinds of fabulous and proves that Myron can hold his own with a high school glee club made up of 20-something actors.

Sue brings Myron to Rachel and Will, who tells them that 13-year-old Myron has been added to the glee club per the appointment by the superintendent. Later, Sue returns to the Hurt Locker and says that she will spend the next few weeks terrorizing Will and the glee club.

For the final, inexplicable performance of the episode, New Directions perform “Cool Kids” by Echosmith.

It was nice to have at least one episode of Glee this season that featured vocals from the newer members. Myron is a breath of fresh air that even this great last season needed as it heads into the final episodes.
