Glee took things to awkward, absurd new levels in tonight’s episode, titled “The Hurt Locker – Part 1.”

Tonight’s episode opens with Sue hanging out with Will, which includes an inner dialogue about how she pities him. She has a breakdown about a fork he left behind, saying she is not cleaning up after him and he has crossed her for the last time. This situation sets Sue’s crazy antics into motion for the rest of the episode.

Becky and Sue show up at a storage facility in Sue’s Le Car. The storage container, called a Hurt Locker, is full of all of her vendettas against the glee club, Al Roker, and others. Sue plays a chord on an organ, which opens a secret chamber that includes a full out, serial-killer style shrine to Klaine, complete with a cardboard cut out of them kissing. “But first…Klaine. I’ve been quietly shipping them since they first met.” Sue admits she wants them to get back together so she can be a flower girl at their wedding.

After Sue organized an invitational exhibition for the local glee clubs, Rachel basically asks Will to throw the performance so that the new New Directions don’t get discouraged. During the exchange, Sue drops in on the conversation via a drone that is recording the conversation apparently unnoticed by either Rachel or Will.

Sue hypnotizes Sam into falling in love with Rachel Berry. “Oh my God, I’m totally hypnotized,” says Sam. We’re finishing up the final episodes and Glee is now using magic to progress the plot line. What more did we expect!?

Meanwhile, when Kurt, Blaine and Rachel are talking about their show choirs just before the invitational, Blaine gets a text from Dave saying there’s an intruder in their apartment. They all arrive to see big burly Karofsky freaking out because a real life bear is inexplicably hanging out on their bed. We later find out that Sue plotted it there because she heard that Blaine was into bears, before Kurt has to outline what exactly what a ‘bear’ means: a burly, hairy gay man. Kurt also insists that he does not want to get back with Blaine and that he met a new person online: Walter.

Hypnotized-Sam sets up piano lessons for him and Rachel with Blaine. Rachel notes while they’re at Breadstix that it’s not a date, but it feels good to be out with someone she cares about. Fans may remember the little exchange these two had shortly after Finn passed away.

Blaine gives Rachel and Sam their first piano lesson, but out of nowhere, Sue comes down out of an electric riser and convinces Sam to end the lesson. Sue goes into “Bitch” by Meredith Brooks in which she appears in Rachel’s desk drawer, Jane’s locker, and various other places as she goes around the school terrorizing everyone.

Dave and Blaine are chatting over dinner at Breadstix when out of nowhere a bunch of guys who Dave has been with start noticing him and saying hello. Sue also lets the two of them know that she looked up their genealogy and discovered that they share a great grandfather, which means they are actually third cousins. “Just remember you’re about to have sex with a family member,” says Sue before leaving them to eat.

Sue goes to Carmel to visit Principal Gunderson, who turns out to be Principal Abigail Figgins Gunderson, the sister of the former McKinley High principal-turned-janitor. Sue presents the footage of Will throwing the competition to Abigail’s chagrin. Will finds out about this, ambushes Sue and says that his job is on the line. Sue goes on a rampage herself about how she can’t stand him and while most of what she says is pretty venomous, it’s all kind of true and based on facts.

While Kurt is complaining to Janitor Figgins about the auditorium, Blaine shows up looking for Sam and Rachel. Kurt and Blaine end up talking about their situation when Kurt admits to Blaine that he has a date later that night. Blaine looks subtly intrigued in a “oh, good for you but I’m not sure how to feel” kind of way. “I hope that goes really well,” says an uncomfortable Blaine. Later at the date, an older man introduces himself to Kurt, who thinks he’s a waiter. It turns out he’s 50-some years old and not the same age presented to Kurt in their online exchanges. “I still feel like I’m 30, which is why I use that picture in my profile,” says Walter before admitting he has a wife and kids.

Again, at the piano, Sam tells Rachel she sounds really good. They launch into Vanessa Carlton’s song “A Thousand Miles,” just as Sue had accurately hypnotized Sam to do earlier in the episode. The chemistry of the song was so powerful, at the end of the song, Sam kisses Rachel. Rachel freaks out and wants to talk to Sam about it, but he doesn’t realize he kissed Rachel (maybe he’s still hypnotized). Sam says he can’t because he’s in love with Mercedes.

Later, Sue hypnotizes Sam again into Phase 2, which includes tormenting and bothering Will Schuster. Will catches Sam breaking into his mailbox where Sam tells him about how Rachel told him to do it. Later, Will tries to pump up Vocal Adrenaline before their performance at the invitational, where someone, on behalf of the entire fandom, mumbles in the background, “We don’t like you.”

Sue wishes everyone happy hunger games before Vocal Adrenaline takes the stage to perform an over the top version of “Rock Lobster” and “Whip it.”

The episode ends somewhat abruptly, likely because it’s the first part of a two-part series.
