It’s Glee’s penultimate weekly episode and Sue finally got to shoot human beings out of canons! We recap one of the last episodes of Glee featuring this year’s Sectionals performances from “We Built This Glee Club.”

The show opens with the Dalton members (wearing their Dalton blazers) demanding that the “dead weight” move to the back of the line during rehearsals. Kitty agrees with them and says they should take one for the team and just listen to what the Warblers are saying.

Sam confronts Rachel again about going back to NYADA. “Just please think about the future,” pleads Sam after they both took turns with lists of performers who either went to college or didn’t. Afterwards, Rachel performs “Listen To Your Heart” and is joined by none other than dreamboat Jesse St. James! It turns out that Jesse is the lead male that will be countering Rachel if she takes the Broadway show produced by Russell Simmons. He tries to convince Rachel to come back to Broadway but Rachel says that she just hasn’t made her mind up yet.

Later, Will trains The Back Row Dancers, also known as Roderick and Spencer. But while spinning, Spencer sprains his ankle but implores that he’s not missing sectionals or a football game because of it. Beiste and Will insist that Spencer is not performing or playing football, but Spencer says that the show must go on and he’ll deal with whatever happens after that later.

Kurt drops by to give his two cents about Rachel and says that Rachel needs to ditch Broadway for now and go back to New York City for college. He also mentions that Blaine is going back because he got into NYU for the next semester as well. “It could all be different,” says Kurt.

The glee club all open gifts that were delivered to them that turn out to be glitter bombs. Not just glitter though — actual explosives. And as you might have guessed, they were from Sue Sylvester and they completely destroyed the choir room piano. Will goes on a hunt for Sue but catches Sam and the rest of the school throwing up all over the place – another one of Sue’s tricks. Sue says that she’s not going to stop until Will quits coaching, just before he runs outside to find his car on fire and exploding. Our own Glee Chat podcast host Caitlin put it best:

Later, Sue goes to get her hair cut but Will goes incognito and traps her in the chair to shave off all of her hair. Well, okay? This had almost nothing to do with the plot and felt completely unexplained – as do a lot of things with this show as head towards the finish line!

Moving on, it’s time for Sectionals. The Falconers perform with live hawks on stage which is both hilarious and awkward at the same time. Vocal Adrenaline perform “We Built This City” in shimmery silver tops and moving scaffolding followed by a performance of “Mickey” where they shoot humans out of cannons and into the audience. The New Directions look on, as they have over the years, perplexed and flummoxed by how incredible of a performance Vocal Adrenaline put together.

In the group circle before New Directions performs, Rachel tells the group that they need to go out and enjoy the lights, applause and the cheers because it might be the last time that the New Directions perform. Just before Spencer gets his cortisone shot to numb his pain, Roderick stops everything. The New Directions go on to perform “Take Me to Church,” by Hozier lead by Roderick.

The second New Directions performance is Sia’s very popular song “Chandelier” from 2014, complete with Myron as the erratic dancer from the music video and an injured Spencer literally swinging from a chandelier. The final performance of the night by New Directions is “Come Sail Away,” and is lead by Mason.

The judges deliberate about the performance. Donna Landers is not impressed by any of the performances and goes on a long rant about them all. They take turns saying weird racist comments to Donna, but finally land on a decision. It turns out that The Falconers came in third, Vocal Adrenaline came in second and New Directions win Sectionals in 2015 — or whatever year this season of Glee is taking place in the space-time continuum.

Sue catches up with Will afterwards to say “you’re welcome.” Sue says that she handed the glee club the victory and that it was all of her master plan after she realized that Will and Beiste took up for her. Will doesn’t buy it at all but Sue makes the connections of the over-the-top Vocal Adrenaline performances with each of the judges that she hired for Sectionals. Sue asks for a “thank you” but doesn’t get it and threatens to find new ways to destroy him.

Rachel catches Jesse in the seats of the auditorium after Sectionals and tells him that she turned down the Broadway part and that she is going back to NYADA. “I think it’s a step in the right direction,” says Rachel. Jesse says that NYADA better watch out because the Berry is back — like any good friend would in this situation before giving Rachel a romantic kiss.

Back in the choir room, the New Directions cheers to their latest victory and combine the old trophies with their new one.

Next week is the 2 hour series finale which will include a flashback episode of how everyone in the glee club met titled “2009.”
