Long time Glee actress Jane Lynch, who plays Sue Sylvester, is responding to the show’s decision to cut several key cast members from season 5.

Speaking to TV Line while promoting her new NBC game show Hollywood Game Night, Lynch understood why cast members Amber Riley (Mercedes), Heather Morris (Brittany), Mark Salling (Puck), Dianna Agron (Quinn) and Harry Shum Jr. (Mike Chang) would not be returning as regular cast members.

“That’s the nature of portraying a realistic view of high school: Kids graduate. They move on,” she said. “I like that we’re following some of the kids to New York where they’re trying to make it as actors and actresses. But the show will evolve, and when a show evolves that means you have to let some people go, and let some storylines go, so that you can pursue new ones.”

A day after those cuts, we learned that Glee season 4 newcomers Melissa Benoist (Marley), Jacob Artist (Jake), Becca Tobin (Kitty), Blake Jenner (Ryder), and Alex Newell (Wade/“Unique”) were promoted to regulars. Their promotion means you can expect to see them a lot more in season 5 and potentially season 6.

Lynch went on to say that she hasn’t read any Glee season 5 scripts yet.

Actress Dot Marie Jones was asked about the shake up earlier this week, as we reported on Monday. The actress who plays Coach Beiste revealed that she hasn’t been asked to return yet. The indecision is likely because many scripts for the fifth season aren’t yet completed.

Glee season 5 premieres Thursday, September 19 on Fox.
