Glee season 5, episode 9, “Frenemies,” had two big friendship fights and only one made up. Check out our recap to see which pair of friends could handle the heat.

After a rude customer at the restaurant gives Sanata a hard time, she explains her hate of her job and life in New York to Rachel. Rachel tells Santana she’s going to be on the cover of New York Magazine and wants Santana to be a model at the photo shoot so she can feel better about herself. Santana goes on to say what a good friend Rachel is. Definitely foreshadowing for dark clouds ahead.

At McKinley High, Artie and Tina are discussing how happy they are that they can still be friends despite their history. Tina admits she got wait listed at Brown and doesn’t like the other schools she applied to. Artie tells her that for the next two weeks at lunch they will only sing happy songs. They begin to sing “Whenever I Call You Friend” and dance through the classroom with the rest of their glee club friends.

Becky comes in and sends Tina and Artie to Sue’s office, who is there to tell the pair that they are tied for the spot of Valedictorian. Sue wants to have a competition to determine the top prize. They each have to write a speech and get judged on what they have written. She threatens that if they sing during the speech she will “dedicate her life to making sure every beverage they drink for the rest of their lives will have a tiny little bit of her pee in it.”

In New York at the photo shoot, Santana and Rachel sing “Brave” as Rachel poses for photos and Santana dreams about getting dressed and made up for photos.

Tina shows Artie the speech she wrote for him, indicating that he should drop out because winning will get her into Brown. Artie declines, despite Tina arguing that he gets everything while she’s always in the background. They both yell back and forth trying to hurt the other.

On the phone Kurt explains to Blaine that Elliot is trying to take over their band so Blaine encourages him to not let on that he’s mad and to keep his enemies close. Rachel begins to stress out about auditions for her understudy in Funny Girl so she feels like she needs to be at the auditions.

Will tells the club they need to decide on who will perform the solo at Nationals. Tina automatically volunteers for the spot, much to Artie’s dismay – who naturally volunteers to compete against her.

At a sing-off, the duo sings “My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It)” where their performance gets so aggressive that Tina accidentally knocks Artie out of his chair.

Kurt invites Elliot over for lunch and starts to ask him personal questions in order to get him to confess to taking over the band. Elliot admits that he wants to be the front man of their band but he also encourages Kurt to get his own guitar so he can learn to play.

At the Funny Girl auditions, Santana shows up singing “Don’t Rain On My Parade.” Despite Rachel’s glaring looks, Santana kills it and she gets the part.

Elliot and Kurt go to pick out a guitar and sing “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” and seem to have a pretty great time rocking out together.

Back at their apartment, Rachel is freaking out to Kurt about the audition and continues to argue when Santana comes home. Santana says that Rachel is just trying to hold her achievements over her head in order to get back at Santana for their issues in high school thus Rachel telling Santana to move out. A phone call interrupts saying Santana got the part.

At the big speech-off, both Tina and Artie end up thanking the other in their speech for changing their lives. They both withdraw themselves from the running. This ends up backfiring completely because Sue just gives the title to Blaine instead.

Still fighting in the dressing room, Rachel and Santana are confronted by Rupert who says they need to drop it and they’re both going to get plenty of publicity. The pair begins to sing “Every Breath You Take.”

Elliot tells Kurt that he knows he was hanging out with him to find out about his intentions but he tells Kurt he won’t take Pamela Lansbury away from him. This seems to dismiss any problems for now and they take a selfie together where Elliot kisses Kurt’s cheek (uh oh!). Back in Lima, Becky shows Blaine the selfie which seems to upset him.

For Blaine’s speech, he decides he wants Artie and Tina to sing with him. They perform “Breakaway” together for the glee club.

The episode ends in New York with Rachel and Santana fighting, and Rachel packing her bags. She leaves the apartment and rips up the picture of her and Santana.
