Speaking on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show this morning, Glee season 5 guest star Demi Lovato spoke about her upcoming five-episode arc this fall.

What’s particularly notable about Lovato’s role is that she’ll play a love interest to Naya Rivera’s character Santana, who is a lesbian.

Lovato recognizes that the opportunity is special because gay characters on television are still not all too common.

“I don’t want people to take from this, ‘Oh my god, Demi is kissing a girl,'” she told Seacrest Thursday morning. “I want people to take from it [that] this is actually an incredible step in our generation today where I’m able to play a young lesbian on primetime TV. I’m honored to be able to be hopefully inspiring people with my character to be who they are and not be afraid of it or ashamed.”

She continued, “There are very few ethnic LGBT characters on television, so I am honored to represent them. I love supporting this cause, but it’s a big responsibility, and sometimes it’s a lot of pressure on me.”

Lovato confirmed that one of the five episodes is already under her belt.

Glee season 5 premieres Thursday, September 26 on Fox. The first two episodes will be Beatles tributes, and just yesterday their Beatles song list was announced in full. Lovato’s character will make her debut on one of the two Beatles episodes.

The singer will also be seen on Fox during the new season of The X Factor on which she is a judge. Both shows air the same night on Fox.
