Glee will return to us this Thursday after a three-week hiatus, and episode 4×15, entitled “Girls (and Boys) on Film,” will feature musical numbers made famous in the movies. Today Glee has released one of these performances, “You’re all the World to Me,” from 1951’s Royal Wedding.

Watch Matthew Morrison and Jayma Mays as Will and Emma perform “You’re all the World to Me” below:

And here’s the original, featuring the legendary Fred Astaire:

As you can see, Glee has created a very specific homage to the original Royal Wedding scene, as this zero-gravity “dancing on the walls” staging is one of the most iconic images of Fred Astaire’s career and of the Golden Age of Hollywood. In Royal Wedding, the film-makers used a custom-made set, which, with a camera attached, rolled on an axis to provide the anti-gravity illusion.

Glee could have used a similar technique – in fact, it’s quite likely, given the small size of the set that they’re in – but however they did it, we’re willing to bet that the creation of this number is one of the things Glee chooses to feature in one of the behind-the-scenes videos that they will release for this episode. Interestingly, they chose to make the number black and white, presumably to give it an “old-timey” feel, despite the original film not actually being in black and white.

What do you think of the performance? We’re not quite sure if Mr. Schuester quite has Fred Astaire’s panache.

Plot-wise, this video shows a romantic interlude between Will and Emma, who were last seen separated, due to Emma jilting Will at the altar. Does this video suggest a happy reunion, or do you think – given the heightened reality that it contains – that it’s a fantasy sequence, happening in Will’s mind? Given this episode’s focus on the movies, several of the  musical numbers are theorised to be complete fantasies, including Kurt and Blaine singing “Come What May.” The episode synopsis released by GleeZone mentions the New York kids being snowed in at their apartment, so it’s unlikely that Blaine would have been able to travel there in the inclement weather.

“Girls (and Boys) on Film” will air at the special time of 9:30pm EST on March 7.
