The season 4 premiere of Girls is this Sunday. Here are five reasons to get excited for the return of Hannah, Shoshanna, Marnie, and Jessa!

Girls season 4, episode 1, “Iowa,” is only a few days away and the premiere does not disappoint. The return splits the 30 minutes evenly between the characters before ultimately bringing them all together, then sending them off into season 4 on their own.

Parents, parents, everywhere!

There are quite a few parents making an appearance in this week’s premiere. Aside from Marnie’s crazy mom, and Hannah’s parents offering their two cents on Hannah’s next step, viewers will be treated to an inside look at Shoshanna’s home life. The ex-couple, played by Ana Gasteyer (SNL, Suburgatory) and Anthony Edwards (ER) are in town to celebrate their daughter’s final moments as an NYU student.

Boozy Brunch

Marnie and Desi’s musical duo book their first gig at a jazz brunch. But the crowd for their performance is less than attentive. Mimosas and screaming children are not the ideal setting, but Marnie needs to overcome a few rough brunch places on the path to success. Will the entire thing crash and burn? Or will Marnie and Desi have a break out success? From Marnie’s past performances on the show, including those karaoke moments, we bet you can guess which it will be.

An Elijah pep talk for the ages

Get your DVRs set to record Elijah’s truth bomb. Funny, tough, and just what the doctor ordered, Elijah’s brief speech will be the first thing you should listen to each morning when you first look in the mirror. If there is anyone on the show from whom you want to hear the harsh truth, it is Elijah.

*Bonus: A few exchanges with Pal (Danny Boyle), Elijah’s ex-beau.

Adam’s interesting career trajectory

With his Broadway run behind him, Adam is entering the awkward limbo between paying professional gigs. The only way to make rent is to take a few odd acting jobs here and there. Viewers will get a glimpse of one of his recent projects as he looks for Hannah’s opinion on the performance.

What’s to come

The premiere does a great job of setting everyone on a great launching pad for the rest of the season. Hannah and Adam deal with things the way Hannah and Adam tend to do, including a toast that honors Hannah “taking the next step in a series of random steps.” But for Jessa another guest star is in control of her next random step. After having her life somewhat together with the artist Beedie, Rickie (Natasha Lyonne, Orange is the New Black) has other plans for her mother’s well being.

Shoshanna and Marnie have a few things to figure out with both the men and uncertain career paths they are faced with at the close of the episode.

By the end of the premiere, you will be itching to know what lies beyond the bridges out of Brooklyn and beyond New York, while also keeping a close watch on those left behind.

Girls season 4, episode 1, “Iowa,” airs this Sunday, January 11 at 9:00 p.m. ET on HBO.
