Girls‘ return to HBO this past week brought back Elijah. Here’s five reasons why Hannah keeps him around and why we all need a friend like him.

Elijah Krantz is the best friend you never knew you wanted until you binge watched all three seasons of Girls. He has the perfect amount of sass, hopeful insights to the future, and he’s not afraid to deliver the cold hard truth. This upcoming Sunday, Girls season 2, episode 2 will find Hannah adjusting to life in the midwest. Hurricane Elijah is set to touch down and shake up the Iowa Writer’s Workshop.

Ahead of this week’s Girls episode, here are five reasons you need to keep a friend like Elijah in your immediate friend group!

1. He knows exactly what you need

Bad day at work? Bad semester at school? You need to have that one friend ready to throw caution to the wind at the drop of a hat. Whether that involves eating burritos in bed with doo-rags on or snorting cocaine off of a disgusting toilet seat in a warehouse, Elijah is ready to go at all times.

2. He’s not afraid to say out loud what you’re thinking

Your best friend is about to embark on a new journey in her life. She’s beautiful and talented and you need to be supportive of the train wreck that is about to occur. Who better to bring as your companion than someone who is willing to verbalize the impending nightmare and make you feel better for having kept your mouth shut?

3. He dishes the harsh truth when you need to hear it

Don’t go feeling sorry for yourself. Sometimes you need to be reminded that not everything is going to go as smoothly as you thought, and that is okay! You can’t let everything get under your skin. He may get his message across with a few expletives more than your grandmother would approve of, but Elijah’s pep talks should snap you out of your doldrums and get you back on the horse.

4. You can go for months without speaking and he’ll still come to your beach party and learn intricate choreography

In every friendship you are bound to have that one argument that forces you to go without speaking for a few months. When you finally run into one another it can go one of two ways: you ignore the issue and move on for it to resurface later, or you lay it on the table and move on. The latter is the type of friend to keep around. Even when months go by without speaking, at the drop of a hat you can pick up right where you left off and have each other dancing by the time the sun goes down.

5. He owns who he is, even when you can’t

Girls is all about exploring possibilities, especially the wrong ones. Changing careers, changing hairstyles, changing fashion sense, the options seem endless. It’s nice to have that one friend in your life who you can typically rely on to own up to their shortcomings and not make every situation about them. (Especially when you have plenty of others in your life fighting for attention.)
