Boundaries are an illusion for most of the characters in our Girls season 4, episode 9 recap.

Not everything is about you! That is a line that most viewers of Girls have probably wanted to scream at Hannah, or Marnie, or Jessa, or even in some fleeting moments at Shoshanna over the last four seasons. On tonight’s Girls season 4, episode 9, “Daddy Issues,” everyone is getting a lesson about respecting those boundaries. But guess who learns something?

Jessa made it known that getting Adam and Mimi Rose together was all a ploy for her to land Ace. She had a few god hands in the beginning of the game, but when she cannot win when Mimi Rose deals herself in and Ace’s are high. The delusions that Ace and Mimi Rose planted in Hannah and Adam two weeks ago were not a smoke screen.

When Ace and Jessa swing by Mimi Rose’s apartment for a quick unwelcome intrusion, both Adam and Jessa watch as Mimi Rose lays her cards on the table. Mimi Rose is jealous of Ace and Jessa, she wants Ace back, but for now she is going to remain single for a while. Jessa grabs Adam and they head out into the night leaving the odd couple to make art about the trajectory of their relationship.

Take back the borough! And that is just what Ray Ploshansky does. Because, as Shoshanna says, what Ray Ploshansky wants, Ray Ploshansky gets. But that is not the case. It is only natural for his success to be out shined by someone else. Shoshanna has thrown herself into Ray’s campaign now that her job hunt has dried up.

Marnie arrives with Desi and something making her left hand a little heavier. Deciding to leave the news under wraps, Marnie instantly walks up to Ray and tells him. If you ever are involved in a criminal coverup, we recommend leaving Marnie out of it.

Michigan and New York are two very distant lands. Tad makes his way to NYC to check in on his adult daughter. Hannah’s concern over her mother’s well-being is well founded as we see a glimpse of Loreen “handling it” in Michigan. Tad reveals to Hannah that however progressive she may claim to be, what works for her parents going forward from this moment is not about what she sees as the right move for a gay man in 2015.

Speaking of 2015, the teens of the day may be more open to sharing and Instagramming, but that does not mean Hannah should be following their lives outside of school hours. Hannah may be the hip, young teacher who connects to her students, but there is a line with Cleo that if she didn’t already cross last week, she certainly did tonight. Hannah is only an adult when it is convenient for her to be one. In school, it should always be convenient, a point that Principal Toby tries to convey to Hannah.

Eljah, is good for a drink and a couple of great one-liners, but beyond that he is also brutally honest. He lays out exactly what Tad is going through and even takes him shopping for some uncomfortably tight white pants. If the pants were not enough to set Hannah off, the conversations about her father’s sexual life from her mother and Tad himself break any remaining shred of boundary left on their relationship.

Ray takes the stage at his victory party to send Marnie a very important message — he will always be there for her, working to understand each other and continue their love. Something tells us, Shosh took a little more away from the speech than Marnie. Especially since the newly engaged lady takes the mic later in the evening to announce to the entire party that she and Desi are getting hitched. And as Hannah perfectly sums up, “She is so not sorry to interrupt.”
