Tonight’s Girls season 4, episode 8 gives honesty a try. For some it is a relief, but for others it causes more trouble than it is worth.

If you ever want to get a good sense of why some people are the way that they are, take a good look at their parents. Viewers caught a glimpse at Shoshanna’s home life when her parents arrived for her to sign for her diploma in the Girls season 4 opener, but not much over four seasons has been about Hannah’s home when she is not the central issue being addressed.

In the opening minutes of tonight’s Girls season 4, episode 8 Hannah’s parents leave their therapy session only to have a more meaningful and open conversation in the hallway than the office. Tad may not be completely fine with Loreen’s tenured position, but he has realized that he is definitely not fine with the gender of his life partner.

Hannah, meanwhile, is skipping classes and having deep conversations with her new best friend from school. That sentence would be far less problematic if Hannah was still in college, but alas, she is abandoning her one responsibility as a substitute teacher — watch a class and make sure they stay in school. But why do that when she can hike up her dress and have an impromptu dance party on the street with a fifteen year old girl? She’s young and free! Except when it is no longer convenient for her. For example after she convinces her “best friend” to get a piercing. After watching Chloe’s occur, Hannah decides that a better lesson for the underage student is to see that changing your mind leaves your body with one less unnecessary hole.

Marnie and Desi are also not in an ideal adult mode as Desi walks into the house with expensive German guitar pedals that will certainly influence their music one or two albums down the road. Except, they might not make it there after Desi spends their entire advance on pedals.

Where Desi has long term goals in mind, Shoshanna has two short term tasks that need taking care of. One, seduce her former interviewer and current date. Two, get Ray elected despite his concentration on “sticking to honesty.”

Shosh takes a blend of Ray’s honesty and Jessa’s advice to sexually shock her date to an uncomfortably weird place. After trudging through past relationships and laying out what both parties want to get away from on the table, Shosh abruptly asks what he sees in their future sexually. Luckily, he is able to defuse the situation by noticing the cast of The Good Wife is at the bar, following which Shoshanna drops a major spoiler. Thanks, girl.

Hannah oozes drama and is a bit overzealous with asserting her self assurance. That’s not surprising to the Girls audience. But as her age appropriate work friend Fran points out, it may be a surprise to her and something she needs to start recognizing in herself. Meanwhile, her father is going through the something similar back home. After coming out to his wife an hour before her tenure dinner party, Loreen’s surprises keep coming. An affair last summer with the husband of her teaching colleague tries to rekindle their lost romance after her current marital strains come to light. While at the dinner party! Seriously, we’d take an episode of Parents any given Sunday.

There are two problems left to solve by the time the sun sets. Marnie and Desi need to kiss and make up and Tad needs to tell his daughter his is gay. Well, Marnie’s cold shoulder melts away when Desi introduces another type of ice to their relationship, an engagement ring. That’s one way to solve your money problems!

Loreen lets Hannah rant about her problems on the phone, but her need to be talked down from one comment takes a backseat to the bubble of her father’s sexuality popping, adding another classic Girls moment to the books.
