Girls season 4, episode 7, “Ask Me My Name,” wants to know one thing, what is your name? Our recap attempts to find who everyone truly is.

How do you really know someone? You could ask them their name, get a few details of their life, but how do you know if any of it is true? On tonight’s Girls season 4, episode 7 Hannah and Mimi Rose get acquainted while Adam pairs off with Mimi Rose’s ex.

Hannah has never seemed more in control of herself in the past three seasons of Girls than she did in front of the group of high school students rattling off what she remembers from college. A sub merely needs to stand up in front of the class and administer busy work, but Hannah engages with them. She is a people person and she seems to be a natural at making everyone in the classroom feel welcomed and safe.

Hannah meets Fran, a high school history teacher, in the teacher’s lounge who wastes no time asking her out on a date. The two enjoy a few laughs over drinks, but Hannah has another plan for the evening that fits right in her track record for never leaving good enough alone. The duo winds up at an offbeat art show hosted by Mimi Rose. Marnie and Desi are present, as well as Jessa, but it is Adam who Hannah scans the crowd for.

Fran plays along well for a while, but ultimately leaves her to figure out what she wants from the encounter. The evening ends with Adam, Mimi Rose, and Hannah meeting Ace, Mimi Rose’s past and probably future lover is a constant in her ever changing life. The group splits up into guys and girls and head out to the after party.

This leaves Hannah alone with Mimi Rose, finally able to get a read on the new girl. But for some reason the person that was in the studio changes her persona what seems like every few minutes. She bounces from topic to topic each one loftier than the last. Hannah is, without a doubt, frustrated and challenged by her presence. She wants to be upset with her flighty nature, but deep down, Mimi Rose gets Hannah to admit something she has been burying since Iowa.

Hannah admits, “I’m sorry that learning more about you physically pains me.” What seems like an act on the surface and the wariness of her artistic nature, deep down troubles Mimi Rose as much as it bothers Hannah. Mimi Rose is doing all this to stay ahead and not let failure creep up on her.

If Iowa didn’t work out, maybe it was because she was not a good enough writer. She was never deeply connected with her craft as much Mimi Rose is in touch with everything that crosses her path. By quitting in Iowa, she feels resolved to a normal, boring life. Perhaps that explains why she broke her date with Fran. It was too comfortable. Hannah despises the comfort of a less than extraordinary life.

In the other cab, Ace points out that Mimi Rose is an artist at heart and an illusion to Adam. Jessa is less concerned with this threat to Adam’s romantic life and more concerned that Ace will be out of the game if he does end up with Mimi Rose again. After all, she set Adam up with Mimi Rose to win Ace over.

Hannah approaches Adam at the after party, but this time her intentions lead her to bid him farewell with her best wishes for his future with Mimi Rose.
