Girls returns to HBO tonight with the season 4 premiere, “Iowa.” If you’re a little rusty on season 3, we have you covered!

Change is in the air on tonight’s season 4 premiere of Girls. After last season’s winding journey from rehab to the beach to Broadway, everyone finally seems to be on their way to something bigger and better. That is, of course, if they are willing to focus on what is right in front of them and not linger in the past.

‘Girls’ season 3 refresher

“Two Plane Rides,” the Girls season 3 finale, gave Hannah, Marnie, and Adam exciting new adventures to consider. Marnie and Desi hit it off musically after meeting through Adam. Mistaking Desi’s insistence to return home to his “Clementine” as a quirky saying that played well with his wanderer persona, she begins to fall for her musical partner. However, Clementine turns out to be a very real girlfriend. Marnie is, if only for a moment, put off by the idea of cheating and makes her move backstage.

Adam and Hannah’s relationship works in its own co-dependent special way. Adam’s success on the stage requires patience and understanding from Hannah, who expects the same, if not more, as she works on her writing. But when her next triumph, acceptance to the Iowa Writer’s Workshop, arrives the same night as Adam’s opening on Broadway she cannot help but steal the moment from him and cash in on her need for attention.

Shoshanna’s well thought out plan for a wild and productive senior year does not account for a failing mark in one class that leaves her three credits shy of graduation. Jessa’s acquaintance with Beedie, an aging artist who wishes death were closer, leads her to assist in a suicide. Only Beedie decides she is not ready to die and Jessa rushes to get paramedics to the apartment.

Tonight on ‘Girls’

Iowa looms on the horizon whether Adam and Hannah are ready or not. Hannah’s bags and boxes are packed, her parents are in town to help with the move, and her and Adam’s relationship status remains status quo. Whatever happens, happens. Meanwhile, Marnie makes her brunch debut with Desi to a less than attentive audience. Shoshonna’s parents are in town to help celebrate their daughter’s graduation, but their overly enthusiastic approach to the matter is not exactly welcome. Jessa continues to work for Beedie, but a visitor from up north sends her life into a state of flux again.

Girls season 4, episode 1, “Iowa,” premieres tonight at 9:00 p.m. ET on HBO.
