New episodes of Girls and Looking will not air this evening in order to avoid going up against Super Bowl XLIX.

Football night in America cannot be beat when it comes to ratings. In fact, most ratings on Thursday, Sunday, and Monday nights measure their success in a “non-sports” category. The Super Bowl is a ratings juggernaut. Not only will most of America be tuned in for the game, but the commercials and Katy Perry halftime show are equally appealing.

Where does that leave HBO’s Sunday night line up? On hiatus for one week!

Despite taking off for the Super Bowl, Girls and Looking tend to spend their season up against stiff Sunday night competition. The two shows premiered against the Golden Globes and have since run against the SAG Awards and the tail end of the NFL Playoffs. On the horizon they will also go up against the Grammy’s and the Oscars. There is no hope down the road for the shows either. AMC’s strong Sunday night line up featuring The Walking Dead will dominate the spring programming.

The network does not seem to see their placement of the shows as a hindrance to their success. Girls was recently picked up for a fifth season, and Looking is pulling in strong reception for its second. HBO’s latest introduction to the lineup, the Duplass brothers comedy Togetherness also snagged a second season. HBO Go accounts and numerous reruns throughout the week also don’t hurt the success of the shows.

Continue to set your DVRs or log in to that HBO account because Girls and Looking are full steam ahead come February 8.

Girls season 3, episode 4, “Cubbies,” continues introducing guest stars in their next episode with the arrival of Mimi Rose, played by Community‘s Gillian Jacobs. Hannah’s writing program continues to test her resolve in the face of constant criticism, but will a trip home only make matters worse?

Meanwhile, on Looking season 2, episode 4, “Looking Down the Road,” Dom and Doris start making plans that do not involve one investor, but many, many investors. A Kickstarter campaign may be the boost he needs to get his piri-piri chicken stand off the ground. As for Patrick, he is caught between trying to reconcile his friendship with Richie and decide if a future with Kevin is possible.

Despite the award shows and football games, there is plenty to come from HBO’s Sunday night comedy block. Be sure to check it out!
