The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is finally getting a sequel, but don’t expect to see any familiar faces when the franchise returns.

Remember Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? David Fincher directed the film back in 2011. It was an adaptation of the book by Stieg Larsson (and an American remake of the 2009 Swedish film), starring Rooney Mara (Social Network, Carol) and Daniel Craig (Spectre, Skyfall).

Seven years later, in 2018, we can expect to finally get a sequel. Buzzfeed broke the news that The Girl in the Spider’s Web will reboot the franchise.

And when they say reboot, they mean it.

Sony has stated that Fede Alvarez will direct the film, which adapts the fourth book in the series, with production beginning in September. They’re also looking to replace the entire cast, so don’t expect Mara to play Lisbeth or Craig to play Mikael.

After Larsson’s death, another writer was hired to continue to the series, which began with Spider’s Web, so it makes sense that Sony is looking to start fresh with this adaptation and perhaps set in motion a franchise that couldn’t get off the ground way back in 2011.

Says Buzzfeed of the book, “The plot of the novel The Girl in the Spider’s Web follows Salander’s ambitious hacking doings, which put her in the crosshairs of the National Security Agency; Blomkvist, meanwhile, is feeling stagnant after his magazine, Millennium, has exposed the Salander-related scandal perpetrated by the government. It’s not long before the two of them embark on solving a twisty new mystery together.”

EW states that the creatives behind the film are launching a “global search” for the new Lisbeth Salander, with Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson, and Alicia Vikander already being considered.

What do you think of a new ‘Dragon Tattoo’ franchise with a different cast?
