Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life’s first trailer sets an incredibly high bar for the four-part revival. Let’s break down everything we saw in the trailer and more!

The first Gilmore Girls trailer delivers just about everything a fan could want to see in under three minutes. If you keep your eyes free from tears for more than a few seconds, there is so much to see!

Below, we break down the trailer into digestible scenes. Let’s see what each moment reveals about the characters, what Stars Hollow is up to, and everything in between.

A house is not a home

The two Gilmore homes are under renovation. Starting with Lorelai and Rory’s abode, it appears that Lorelai has finally let Luke have a proper cooking space. The cute 1950s vibe compliments the brand new appliances in the space.

An essential Gilmore staple appears not once, but twice within the space — a coffee pot. Not one, but TWO coffee pots. Granted, these two scenes likely take place in “Spring” and “Winter”, respectively, so it is likely that the location of the pot moves over time.

Seriously, where can we get that fridge and stove?

The second Gilmore home sees a makeover of its own. Richard’s death sends Emily into a cleansing state. If an item does not bring her joy, it must go. Not all of her wardrobe staples fall victim to this cleanse, but some new additions raise alarm.

There is, however, one item that brings her the most joy, the giant portrait of Richard in the sitting room. “It’s wonderful, isn’t it?”

The flashback we don’t want to see

We have just a few weeks left to prepare for the worst scene in Gilmore Girls history. It’s going to be hard. Oh, so very hard.

The trailer confirms that there will be a flashback to Richard’s funeral. Emily standing in front of that casket… We can’t find the words.

Hopefully, she will become comfortable with a version of herself that is not the half of a whole. It’s not going to be easy, after all she and Richard were together for over 50 years. But it appears that maybe she gets away from it all for a little while.

What says spa and retreat weekend quite like a glass of cucumber water?

Growing Pains

The question of Rory’s trust fund sits uncomfortably close to the forefront of our thoughts. Her career seems to take her wherever she pleases.

Consider then that maybe this trust-fund baby is freelancing her way around the world.

What a life! Emily is keen to offer her opinion on the matter, but when has anyone taken her advice?

Rory approaches, of all people, Jess for a chat about her directionless life. A little note about this scene in particular — The Stars Hollow Gazette?

Could Jess truly embrace the small town life after all?

Lorelai, on the other hand, is looking for therapy from someone who feels like a long lost daughter. Yes, it looks like Mae Whitman will play some sort of therapeutic role for her TV mom. Perhaps a grief counselor?

Around the town

Ah, that small town life! What is going on in town of Stars Hollow since we last left them?

A new production by Taylor Doose brings in out of town talent and even a familiar musical personality. Sophie is back!

The series will end with whatever Taylor has in mind as the costumes hint at pilgrims’ involvement. (Yes, Sutton Foster and Christian Borle reunited to bring joy into our lives.)

Corn starch is on sale.

A heated debate about the sewage system is happening in Stars Hollow. You’re either for it or against it.

The Gilmore Guys are in town!

A few lingering questions

What are the two Gilmore ladies dressed up for? What are we celebrating? Why is Luke allowing them to drive around town like that?

Does Lorelai actually enjoy outdoor activities now? Or does she just like the clothes that come with the setting? (Never forget her attempt to learn how to fish…)

Why is Kirk at Friday night dinner? Our guess, it’s part of a new business venture.

Who is in that fancy town car?

Why?

Hi, Sookie! What is that town on your cake?

Do April and Rory share a room at the house now? That Algebra One book is slightly too old for both of them, though.

The show is all about our girls

Guest stars, town favorites, and boyfriends aside the trailer made one thing clear — this is still a show about Rory, Lorelai, and Emily Gilmore.

All three women are trying to keep their feet on the ground. Lorelai looks for someone to tell her what she has is enough. Emily tries to discover who she is if not Richard Gilmore’s wife. And Rory explores what life might offer her if she stops moving for a second.

Where these stories will end is anyone’s guess.
