Who will replace Daniel Craig as James Bond? Amidst the Idris Elba and Tom Hiddleston rumors, a new fan favorite has emerged: The X-Files‘ Gillian Anderson.

Ever since the news that Daniel Craig likely will not resume his role as James Bond in the next instalment (having instead signed up for a U.S. TV series titled Purity), fans have taken to social media to express their support for various actors — and actresses — they’d like to see step in to replace him.

What’s been evident above all else is that audiences at large are tired of the 007 moniker being restricted to white, male actors.

Idris Elba has obviously been a favorite fantasy casting for years, but now, another candidate has emerged: The X-Files‘ Gillian Anderson.

And before you cry nationality foul, it’s worth noting that Anderson is bidialectal: Her parents are English, and she spent parts of her childhood Britain. She’s familiar to U.K. audiences as the lead in BBC’s The Fall (if X-Files and Hannibal hadn’t already secured her international legacy).

She’s currently destroying the competition in the #NextBond hashtag, and when she retweeted a fan-made poster, her followers went wild:

“It’s Bond,” Anderson wrote. “Jane Bond.”

Of course there are more ‘visually conventional’ choices as well, including Luke Evans and Tom Hiddleston. But we daresay Gillian Anderson is the most true-to-type option, being both familiar with government agent roles and sharing Daniel Craig’s calculated, steely gaze.

Other names that have been dropped into the fantasy casting hat include Chiwetel Ejiofor, Emily Blunt, Ruth Negga, Matthew Lewis, Daniel Day Lewis, and John Boyega.

The 25th James Bond movie has not yet entered pre-production, with no director yet selected after Sam Mendes announced that Spectre would probably be his last.
