Months after American Gods showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green exited the series, the god of Media follows suit.

Dominos are falling in American Gods land. Gillian Anderson’s departure as Media is the first major exit since the showrunners left the Starz project. Now, could Kristin Chenoweth be next?

The LA Times, in their review of The X-Files, mention that Anderson will not return as Media. The source cites the departure of Bryan Fuller and Michael Green as the catalyst for her decision.

This announcement comes on the heels of the actress’ decision to not return for more X-Files. The recently rebooted series on Fox reunited Mulder and Scully for two seasons. Season 11, airing now, will be Anderson’s last. Although this is not news for fans of the show, Chris Carter confirms The X-Files will not continue without Anderson.

In a Reddit AMA Carter wrote, he says, “For me, the show has always been Mulder & Scully. So the idea of doing the show without [Anderson] isn’t something I’ve ever had to consider. Was her character given a proper goodbye? I think you will want to sit down and watch the series finale very carefully.”

But what about Chenoweth? The American Gods press day highlighted the connection between the actress and the showrunners.

Chenoweth plays Easter, the goddess of the spring, harvest, fertility, and lavish parties. Her introduction arrives in the last episode of the first season.

With only one episode under her belt, Easter’s story is only just beginning. American Gods has many great assetts — creative teams, writers — but the cast is certainly the strongest.

How many more blows can the Starz series take?

American Gods has a season 2 order at Starz. New showrunners are not in place at the time of publication.
