Oh my! George Takei is releasing a graphic novel about his life, including his time in a Japanese-American interment camp.

In 2018, IDW is set to publish George Takei’s life story as a graphic novel. Takei is known for his activism, particularly for LGBTQ rights. He hopes that this graphic novel will highlight another important part of his life.

There’s more to George Takei’s story than his time aboard the Enterprise on Star Trek. Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Takei and his family were forced into a Japanese-American internment camp.

In a statement, Takei says, “I have spoken publicly on numerous occasions during my life on the unjust internment.” The graphic novel will help further his “ongoing mission of spreading awareness of this disgraceful chapter of American history.”

This is not the first telling of Takei’s story.

The Broadway musical Allegiance borrows a few notes from his family history. It is the first Broadway musical to have an Asian-American director, writers, and predominantly Asian-American cast. Takei starred along side Telly Leung and Lea Salonga. The production lasted from October 2015 through February 2016.
