Though the full novel is still some time away, author George RR Martin has shared a new chapter from The Winds of Winter, the sixth novel in his series A Song of Ice and Fire. Minor spoilers for the chapter below.

In keeping with his occasional habit of sharing excerpts of works-in-progress with readers, George RR Martin has recently posted a new sample chapter from his upcoming novel The Winds of Winter on his (charmingly GeoCities-esque) website. Follow the link below to the chapter!

On the morning that she left the Water Gardens, her father rose from his chair to kiss her on both cheeks. “The fate of Dorne goes with you, daughter,” he said…

The chapter features the point-of-view of Princess Arianne, heir to Dorne, the most southern and most independent of the Seven Kingdoms. Arianne played a mildly prominent role in A Feast for Crows, but only appeared peripherally in A Dance with Dragons, the latest installment in the Song of Ice and Fire series. If this chapter is any indication, the princess of Dorne will be one of many characters vying for the spotlight in The Winds of Winter.

The unfortunate (though expected) bit is that there is currently no news on when readers can expect to enjoy The Winds of Winter in its entirety. It does seem that Martin has his nose to the literary grindstone, though; introducing the chapter on his blog Livejournal, he wrote, “Read, enjoy, discuss, and speculate to your heart’s content… Me, I have a lot more writing to do. On WINDS, and half a dozen other projects.”

But in the meanwhile at least, fans of the series can anticipate the third season of Game of Thrones, which premieres on March 31 on HBO. Westeros, you can’t get rid of us quite that easily!

What did you think of the sample chapter?
