Author George R.R. Martin allegedly said at an Emmy party that the epic run of HBO’s Game of Thrones would include a feature film, but those reports are now being deemed inaccurate.

Update (2:30 p.m. eastern): Hours after this story broke, George R.R. Martin told a commenter on his blog that these claims and quotes are not true. “Yes, completely false. No one is working on any movie just now. And if there was a movie, it would not be about Robert’s Rebellion,” said George.

With that said, this isn’t the first time we’ve heard about a Game of Thrones movie — And we doubt it’ll be the last.

According to The Daily Star, Martin confirmed the Game of Thrones movie after last week’s Emmy Awards.

“There will be a movie,” Martin says, “but I will not be involved. I have too much to do. That is something HBO and [showrunners] DB [Weiss] and David [Benioff] are dealing with.”

Martin, author of the epic A Song of Ice and Fire novels on which Game of Thrones is based, is reportedly keeping his unfinished series at the top of his priority list.

“I have two more books to finish and I still have so much to do,” he says. “The pressure is on. I am such a slow writer and the fans get upset that I don’t write faster.”

Pulling back from an active involvement on Game of Thrones is nothing new for Martin, who has not written an episode of the series since season 4. The author has also previously expressed support for a Game of Thrones movie, perhaps one that will serve as an ending for the popular fantasy series.

“The books get bigger and bigger [in scope],” Martin said last year. “It might need a feature to tie things up, something with a feature budget, like $100 million for two hours. Those dragons get real big, you know.”

However, HBO president Michael Lombardo has been publicly skeptical about the idea, primarily due to HBO’s status as a subscription network.

“The promise is that for your HBO fee that we’re going to take you to the end of this,” Lombardo said. “I feel that on some level [a movie would be] changing the rules: Now you have to pay $16 to see how your show ends.”

A potential compromise, also suggested by Martin, may lie in the vast materials the author has produced beyond the main storyline of Game of Thrones.

According to The Daily Star, a “production insider” suggests that a feature film may go back in time — possibly filling in scenes during the timeline of Game of Thrones, or else dealing with a different period entirely. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas, which tell the story of a lowborn hedge knight and his unlikely squire (the future King Aegon V) have frequently been suggested as material for a Game of Thrones movie.

In the meantime, Game of Thrones fans can catch up on season 5’s digital release, and await information on season 6 — which seems more dramatic with each passing day.
