George Lucas isn’t a fan of The Oscars, and has come out to slam the prestigious awards ceremony.

Last week saw the reveal of the 2015 Academy Awards nominees, which have been criticized for their lack of diversity (no persons of color are nominated in the major acting categories), and head-scratching snubs like Selma and The Lego Movie.

George Lucas, whose animated musical Strange Magic hits cinemas on Jan. 23, appeared on CBS This Morning to basically slam the Oscars and deem them a pointless, political farce.

“It’s a political campaign. It has nothing to do with artistic endeavor at all,” Lucas told host Gayle King.

George Lucas has twice been nominated by the Academy for a Best Director award, once in 1974 for American Graffiti, and again in 1978 for his first Star Wars movie, A New Hope.

In 1992 he won the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, for his contribution to movie production.

“Why do we elect people who drift toward not the most talented, best, and brightest we have in the country?” Lucas, who claims he has opted not to be a member of the Academy himself, wonders. “I think it hurts everybody.”

George Lucas is far from the first industry professional to complain about the Oscar voters’ predictability when it comes to selecting nominees for the hyped-up award.

This year, however, does mark a change from the usual nomination pattern: the Academy has heavily favored indie productions over big-budget Hollywood blockbusters, which has led skeptics to wonder whether this year’s ceremony (which is to be hosted by Neil Patrick Harris) will manage to attract a substantial amount of viewers.
