The British cult classic television show, Peep Show, is being developed by FX for American audiences, and it will have female leads.

The television show Peep Show has quite the loyal following among viewers in the U.K. and outside of it as the longest-running comedy on C4. Shot in first person, Peep Show is about two friends, Mark and Jeremy, who aren’t exactly the coolest guys in the world, and their adventures in dating, the workplace, and beyond. The final season aired back in 2015, but it looks like the world of Peep Show will be getting a new life.

According to Deadline, FX is attempting a remake, and Karey Dornetto (writer and co-executive producer of Portlandia and Superstore) is writing the script. And while the original script focused on two male protagonists, Dornetto’s version of Peep Show will feature two women.

There’s no word yet on who those two women will be. However, we are excited to not only see Peep Show potentially finding new life in this American remake, but the potential of another female-led comedy joining the ranks is a wonderful prospect.

Of course, this isn’t the first time that Americans have tried to adapt Peep Show. In fact, it’s been tried several times and no one has quite been able to replicate the massive success the original show enjoyed.

Deadline explains that Fox attempted a pilot starring Big Bang Theory’s Johnny Galecki back in 2005, the Spike network attempted a pilot in 2008, and Starz attempted an adaptation in 2016. So while it is exciting to see the potential of an American remake, this is a well-traveled road, and it’s never gone super well for these networks who have tried to bring the show across the pond.

Of course, there is certainly a lot going in favor of FX’s remake. In addition to a great writer and the gender-swapped element, the cultural nostalgia wave could potentially bolster longtime fans while still bringing in new viewers.

The show is still in very early stages, but we’re excited to see Dornetto’s take on Peep Show, and we can’t wait to see who will be playing her version of Mark and Jeremy. For now, you can stream the original series on Hulu.
