The CW has announced Freedom Fighters: The Ray is in the works and will feature the first lead gay superhero in a modern TV or film series.

The animated series will premiere on CW Seed, the network’s streaming service.

Speaking to reporters this morning, The CW’s Mark Pedowitz said that the character will eventually show up in live-action form on one of the Arrow-verse TV shows currently airing on the network. If/when it happens, it won’t be unlike what they did with Megalyn E.K.’s Vixen on Arrow.

“Without question,” Pedowitz said of The Ray coming to a live-action TV show. “That is the way we are intending to build these things out.”

According to a statement from the CW, “Raymond ‘Ray’ Terrill was a reporter who discovered a group of government scientists working on a secret project to turn light into a weapon of mass destruction.”

“But before he could report on his findings, the project head exposed Ray to a ‘genetic light bomb.’ The bomb failed to kill him and instead gifted Ray with light-based powers. With these abilities, Ray realized he could go beyond reporting on injustice – he could take action to help stop it. Calling himself The Ray, he was recruited by Uncle Sam and the Freedom Fighters to fight violence and oppression wherever it exists.”

The gay Ray was penned by DC Multiversity writer Grant Morrison, who was tasked with updating the Freedom Fighters “to better reflect American demographics.” Yay, diversity!
